Jennie, I teach third grade too and my school just had their science fair last week, so I truly know how you feel. But heres a list of science project titles I think could really help you. 1. Which exercise raises heartbeat most? 2. Does color affect mood? 3. Does sugar change your mood? 4. What type of soda makes you burp most? 5. Do taller people take longer steps? 6. Can you taste the difference between sugar and Equal? 7. Which melts slowest-ice cream or frozen yogurt? 8. Which bubble gum brand blows the biggest bubbles? 9. Which can support more weight, plastic or paper grocery bags? 10. Which popcorn brand gives the most popped kernels? I hope these titles provide some help for you. Bye.

Parents doing projects

I currently teach second but I taught third for 5 years. For regular homework, I don't mind if parents help but, unless an arrangement has been made, the work should be in the child's own writing. I have had a couple of children where the act of writing was an issue, so those children were allowed to write part and dictate part of an assignment. for projects, i remind the children that parents may help but most of the work should be theirs. If there is a hard word used in a report, the student should be able to explain what it means. (One boy was able to explain what "straddled" meant in a report on a constellation.) I don't grade projects done at home in a lower grade because so much is done by the parents. My principal feels that it isn't a problem if a parents helps since it may ...

Which brand of bubble gum has the longest lasting flavor? This one is funnt to me because my friend won the 8th grade science fair with this. He did it the night before!Which plant grows best? One watered and in light, or one watered one in a dark closet. One watered with water, milk, or soda? Which battery brand lasts the longest? Grow mold on bread in a baggie, in the open, in the refrigerator. Which one grew mold first? Does your dog/cat eat out of a red or blue food bowl better? Does the color matter? Grow 3 types of seeds...which does best? These are just off the top of my head...I don't have a website idea.

Last year I did one take home project per marking period and didn't have a problem (I teach third grade). I think it depends on the means of the parents where you work. I would not have been able to do that at the last school I worked in. Some ideas: State Fair---each student chose a state (they all had different ones) and they wrote a five paragraph report (had to have certain info.) and they created a tri fold board to present at the State fair. They had to have an attention getter (food, things from that state, pamphlets, etc) VERY FUN! Science Fair--our school required participation Biography papers--- students chose famous people, did research and wrote a paper. They they created a poster board and we had a wax museum...very fun. Landform...

departmentalizing in 4th grade

I am just completing my first year as a 4th grade teacher. I have previously taught 2nd and 3rd. 4th and 5th grades at this school are departmentalized. WE do however draw the line at the number of times we switch and for how many subjects. There are 4 of us and we are divided into 2 teams. Two of us teach Math and Science, and two teach ILA (Intergrated Language Arts)and Social Studies. This works really well for us. We meet as a grade level each week, so we all know what we are studying. We then meet by subjects taught to plan. All 4 of us have exactly the same homework on our boards as our teammate. Consistancy is a key in making departmentalization work. We switch classes after an hour and a half to an hour and 45 minutes for our first (homeroom) class. We try to take our...

I teach 8th grade and we have our students do independent study projects. They pick their own topic and have to relate it to math in some way. For example, some students find the cost to build their dream house, research the math involved in their favorite sport, build scale models of different buildings using proportions... It is totally open ended and they get to do whatever they want. The projects are amazing. We conference with the students along the way, providing more structure to the students who need it. We want them to pick something they'll enjoy working on... which is like science fair. You could create a list of sample topics, and also allow them to see what they can come up with. You topics could also be more contenet specific like "Fractions and their use in the World" (m...

"State Fair"

I teach 2nd, but I had an idea that I thought would work wonderfully when teaching the states (we do states and capitals in 3rd grade)...
It is called a "State Fair"...each student is assigned a state (as a class you could do your home state during whole group instruction). They would research their state, write a paragraph or report about their chosen state, have some sort of artistic component (draw/paint map, symbol, etc), create graphs maybe comparing the population, crops, or industries of your state to the assigned state, and so on....
As a culminating activity you could have a classroom or grade level "State Fair". (If you could get your grade level peers on board you could have the whole country represented!) The students would set up and present their projects eith...

Science reports

I teach fifth grade and I know my students struggle to create science fair projects without outside help. What are your science topics? I think the best to expect for independent work would be a diorama project about your science topics or a journal type observation about your science topics. When I have students who do not turn in projects, I am not allowed to give them 0s either, so I give them a 50 and require them to write a one page description a project that was presented to them by another student. Good luck!

Moving to another grade

Andrea,I have taught 4 and 5th for 12 years and highly recommend you get a definite discipline plan first. It ususally takes 2 weeks to 1 month to let the 5th graders know you mean business. Otherwise they will walk on you all year. I mean be very consistent. No chances. Once that is in place you will have a fabulous year. They have a great sense of humor and love doing long projects. Some good books to read would include Holes, On your honor, I Am Regina, Lucy Whipple, Box Car children for your lower readers, Winn Dixie, any non-fiction you can get your hands on, all the Harry Potter books, War With Grandpa, and tons of read alouds. They also love poetry. you can do those as shared readings and make poetry books to keep in their desks to read whenever or memorize. You will pr...

It's crazy how the parents think we don't realize that it's THEIR work and not the kids. So I learned from a fellow teacher to Grade the parents' work!!!!!! They pretty much get the picture when they see it coming home with the graded papers. I especially can't stand it when it is a Science or Social Studies fair projects!
