CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Genghis the Teacher Teaching is a great job if you can do two things: 1. Teach the students to be kind and polite. 2. Manage the paperwork. CANI: Constant And Never-ending Improvement If you improve by 10% per year, in a very short period of time you will be one of the best teachers in the school.Take responsibility for your students. How do you explain why some classes are orderly and others are chaotic? If Patton walked into the class, do you think for one second anyone would be disrespectful? Norman Schwarzkopf, or Jaime Escalante? Let’s take our lessons from: Blaming the students, their parents, their neighborhood or your principal for rude and disrespectful behavior only eliminates y...

Everyday math

There may be waves at Hampton Beach, but there is a bigger wave of children within SAU21 being cheated out of a fundamental "basic" math education. As the K-5 children are being subjected to the current math curriculum in Hampton, not even 50% of the student population can meet the "proficient" (standard) of their grade level in a NH only test. And the numbers look worse if the Hampton children compete with MCAS standards and IOWA test standards. For those that are not aware of the poor K-5 math curriculum, check out the open letter to the secretary of education from 200 mathematicians, along with 7 Nobel prize winners, describing their rejection of the Everyday Math curriculum, a.k.a. Fuzzy Math, reform math, new math. Not for a minute could anyone refute their evidence based rejec...

2nd grade

While every group of children is different, I have found that the more you challenge these kids, the more they will rise to the occasion. Praise takes you MILES with 2nd grade where I teach. To answer some of your questions from my point of view:1) I give Math homework daily and spelling homework is: Monday--write words 3 times Tuesday--write a sentence with each word Wednesday--write words 3 times Thursday--practice test in class--write missed words 5 times Friday--test We also have a daily reading log where the students are required to read 40 minutes per week at home. I have all the paperwork if you are interested. The log is due on Mondays and if they don't do it, they read at recess all week until they have accumulated 40 minutes. 2) We have the Accelera...

I hope this helps. I tried to answer all of your questions. I teach 2nd grade in Florida. This is my first year teaching. 1.What kinds of parent teacher communication are expected? How do you handle problems?
I communicate to my parents through a monthly newsletter. I also send home weekly reports for the students who need one. I call parents also if needed. I make sure to have a positive relationship with the parents in my class. Before school started I called each parent to welcome the child into my classroom. After school started I held a parent orientation to go over policies, procedures, and to anwer questions that the parents may have. 2.When do teachers have free periods, breaks, lunch, etc.? Must they remain at school during their breaks? At my school I get ...

Hi Mandy!
I'm one of your website's biggest fans, so I'm glad I can finally offer something to you in return for the many wonderful, useful ideas and projects I've found on your site!
Roach Van Allen is the name associated with the Language Experience Approach. I found a couple of lessons/explanations online but I also included something I've done with my own students.

============
My lesson:
You may have to 'tweek' this a bit for your own students, but this is something I wrote up a while back when a friend needed some lessons for English Language learners, which is my primary student population. Hope it's useful to you! I've used it with...

Sorry I wasn't clear before

I tiptoed around as much as I could on my first post. It seems strange but we talk about "other cultures", "other religions" in a manner that we should for some reason be more tolerant of their beliefs and less tolerant of our own.With the Jehovah Witness child - I never meant that I would celebrate a special day in lieu of his birthday. But every birthday he would sit quietly or have to leave the room if a parent did bring in a cake and watch all the other children be given a pencil and birthday card and treat from myself. So somewhere in the year I just ensure that I give him a pencil and a little treat to let him know he is special too, not for his birthday or to take away from what his parents and religion teach. I'm talking about first grade here, they don't always understand t...

My Thoughts

Dealing with discipline problems in the classroom probably ranks up there high on the list of any sub as a big problem. For me, I find poor lesson plans more irritating. Each teacher is different. Everyone has a style and way of doing things. As a sub, will I know exactly how you do things in your classroom unless you tell me? No. Teachers tend to write their plans as though subs are mind readers. We must have special powers I guess to know how some things are done and where we can find what will be needed for the day. Here is an example. I subbed in a class where I was supposed to do a reading lesson in small groups for a good part of the morning. Each reading group had different books to use. Could I find those books? No. Did the teacher tell me in her plans where to find th...

My take on it

1&2 You are in charge, not the students. How long are you going to "wait" for them to be ready. And never tell them you are going to wait because really they could care less if you start. Probably prefer if you don't. 3 Someone once told me that they spank their kids because it teaches the kids to behave. I asked them if they still do it and they said yes. I compare the yelling to the spanking. If you have to do it over and over again then it's not working. If it worked, you would only have to do it once. 4&5 By all means walk around. You might find a kid in the back that needs your help but is too scared to ask in front of the class for fear of looking "dumb" You're not a college prof. lecturing to a large group. 6 Yeah, sometimes you need to show the kids that y...
