Healthy Teachers Needed

Posted 04-02-2010 at 02:53 PM by tia

Isn't it our responsibility to be as healthy mentally and physically as we can? Don't our students deserve that?

Just doing a little blogxperiment...

I agree when it comes to mental health. When my wife passed away in '03, I was working as a tech teacher for the Boys and Girls Clubs. Given that most of the children I served came from backgrounds that needed good role models, I really felt at that time that I couldn't give them my best. The director really wanted me to come back, but I knew that I wasn't in the right state of mind at that time to benefit those children. I was in too dark a place.

As far physical health goes, I'm guilty as charged. I have to be on my death bed to miss a day because of sickness. As a matter of fact, I haven't missed a day for being sick in I don't know how long. I'll take half days for doctor appts., but I'll come in sicker than a dog. I know, I know, dumb. I look at it this way- even at my worst, I'm still better for my kids than a sub would be (i.e. effect of change, not a real teaching day given that I do specialized programs etc.)
