The story so far...

Posted 06-23-2011 at 05:22 PM by TcherGurl528

To be honest, I'm a cliche. I was the kid who made her younger brothers do every page in those ridiculous educational workbooks that my mother would buy for us. I read to my stuffed animals every night before bed. I have lived and breathed teaching since I was a toddler. And when I turned 16 and it was time to start working, I chose to work at a local elementary school at their after school program. My plan, upon heading off to college, was to major in Elementary Education. I was pretty sure I had it all figured out.

But the world works in mysterious ways. As a freshman, my Elementary Education adviser handed me a piece of paper and said, "Here's your schedule for the next 4 years," and I balked. No studying abroad, no class choices... So instead, I majored in psychology and minored in Special Education. Because truthfully, the kids who needed the most help were the ones I wanted to work with most. But I could see the writing on the wall -- Special Education was becoming push-in rather than pull-out, so I decided that I would go on to grad school and become a classroom teacher, in hopes of one day becoming a special ed. teacher.

Fast forward a few years -- a veteran classroom now gets involved in redesigning the reading curriculum of the district. Suddenly a personal passion (reading) becomes a professional one as well. And it becomes clear -- Reading Specialist. So hi ho, back to school I go...well, went. And become certified. And plan to find a job...except, yet again, life intervenes...

Only this time, it's life and not my career that's calling -- I am pregnant. It works out that I am due the end of October, and after MUCH deliberating, my husband & I decide that I will start the school year and then take a leave of absence for the rest of the year to stay home with our baby. And after an amazing year of marveling over the amazing speed that my daughter grew and changed, it became time to think about returning to work.

Which is where we are now -- well, almost. In an amazing confluence of events, I somehow managed to apply, interview, and be offered a job within 3 days. And it's not just any job -- it's my dream job. Part time Reading Specialist, part time Literacy Coach -- getting to work with both students and teachers. Helping inspire a passion for reading and a love of books in students.

So here we are. I am equally terrified and excited. I am overwhelmed at the prospect of packing up my classroom to move. I am scared to be the "new kid" in a new school. But I also know that this is the next step to something great -- and I can't wait to get there.
