Our school uses the Lucy Calkins writing “curriculum”... we do partners for editing . If I notice a writer is struggling with spelling for example, I’ll do a small group mini lesson on editing for spelling together. I don’t write on the work, instead we’d discuss, do a mini lesson and make a sticky note of things they could go back and recheck. They can take the sticky note back as a reminder and retry to correct the work they did.

I gradually release responsibility as the year progresses.
By 2nd semester I will put a mark on the line that indicates
Spelling capitalization or punctuation error on the line. But I don’t fix the mistake.

When I taught second grade I had students edit their writing using Steve Dunn's steps to editing. One of the steps is circling any words they think are spelled wrong. When I met with each student, I would go over their editing marks and help them correct their writing. I agree that students need to see it correctly. How else will they learn?

I'll make this short and to the point...

How much correction/support do you give for a 2nd grader in writing? I'm of the mindset that you don't pick it apart, but I do circle mispelled words, discuss phrasing, etc. during their conference with me after they've gone through peer editing and self revision.

I work with some who do not feel it's appropriate to do any of that leaving it all to student editing and revision. While I understand the purpose, I still strongly feel they should see it correctly.
