Students not completing (or even starting) their work is a problem that I know a lot teachers face, and despite being in my seventh year of teaching at the middle school level, I still haven't figured out a good way to deal with it.


At my new school, the middle school teachers (6th through 8th) have set in place a late work policy that allows students to turn in work up to one week late for full credit. After that, the assignment becomes an automatic 0, with any further opportunity to turn it in or complete being completely at each teacher's discretion on a case-by-case basis.


I have a large portion of students that are missing particular items (like an online test) and there are students that are missing a lot of assignments. Would you take time to have "work days" to allow students to complete that work, or assuming you provided the time and reminders, push forward in your curriculum and let the students face the consequences of not completing the assignments?

Do not allow them class time to complete missing work or they will never complete it on their own and always expect you to give them class time. I would start by contacting parents of kids with missing work and make sure they are coming to tutorials to complete the work.

If other teachers are having the same issue would it be possible to have a couple of hours, or a morning where all students make up late work. If students are caught up they could have free time. Maybe a couple of teachers could supervise the students who have all work caught up. The rest of the teachers would be supervising the students who have work to do. I would maybe only do this once a quarter, before final grades are due. We all know that students SHOULD be responsible to get things done, but most aren't. This would also show parents and administration that teachers are all on the same page.
