I think it could depend heavily on the size of your class. If you have 20+ students, you do need to manage things like attendance and supplies accordingly. Also, if other teachers come into your room for class (such as Spanish or music) then you may need to touch base with those teachers to see about their needs. But perhaps instead of desks, each student could have an assigned table as a start and end point for the day.

I have a small class so I can easily incorporate desks and tables, centers, etc. I am planning on having a desk for each student, but am not sure if I will assign seating.

Hi luvpup,
That's certainly a challenge. Have you considered making your centers portable? I've seen teachers put all center materials in a basket and then students work in their grouped desks on the particular "center".
Maybe that will help.

Thanks for the info. I wish I had tables but will be getting desks which I plan on putting together in groups of four. I have a rather small classroom but will have 21 students. Trying to maximize space for all daily 5 rotations while giving students options.

I have tables and every student has a seat at the tables. I also have some designated places for certain centers. For example I have a writing station table that seat four. If students choose to go to work on written they have the option of writing at the writing center table or going to their seat. For read to self they can read in the classroom library area or at their table. None of this affects what goes on during other times of the day or during lessons for other subjects.

We have tables and each student has his or her own seat; however, I use Daily 5 as part of my center rotation so the students would not be at their home seats during this time. But every student has a seat available to them at all times.

but during Daily 5, they rarely sit at their desks. Actually, some really like to sit under their desks. I have the occasional student who prefers to sit at their desk for Read to Self. Many sit at a desk (their's or someone else's) during Work on Writing but it is never required. I have clipboards that they can use if they don't want to sit at a desk.
Unless students are not doing as they are supposed t be doing, I rarely assign seating during any round of Daily 5. Kid can pick any where to complete their choice of rounds -- carpet, mats, under tables, under desks, at tables, at own desk, at someone else's desk.

New to daily 5, first grade. I've read the book, first edition. How do you set up your classroom as far as desks? the book says not a desk for every student because there are other places to sit, and I get that for the daily 5 rotation. But how does that work for other subject areas? Or when the kids first come in in the morning? Seems like it might be a little chaotic? Would love to hear your comments.
