I do something slightly different than the traditional curve. If more than 2/3 of a class period misses an one multiple choice question, I give the point(s) for that question back to the students. I figure, if that many people miss it, wither I didn't teach it effectively enough or it wasn't a very good question.

Theoretically, a class could decide to deliberately get all the answers wrong as a way of gaming the system, but in 15 years, no class has ever tried that

Does your school weight your scores so that tests and projects have a greater value than classwork or homework?

If so, can you list this test as a HW assignment or quiz rather than a Test? That way, you can list the test scores as they stand but they will not hurt any worse than a mediocre assignment.

If the scores are really out of character for your kids, then I see nothing wrong with curving.

That's the problem. I covered the material but the district test was on computer and I was not able to see the test questions, but they were tested on the standards I was required to teach. I'm sure some probably just played around but then I don't know if I covered it efficiently? It was on Inquiry (high school science).

I believe it requires looking at the exam to decide that question. I know I'm not in high school, but believe it or not it still comes up even with the younger kids. I look at the test and try to figure out what went wrong. Were they messing around? Did they fail to use their strategies? Well then, a bad grade will teach them an important lesson. Did I not cover something on the test? Or did I cover it poorly? Then I curve, they were not properly prepared, and that is not their fault.

My students were given an exam provided by the district. The scores are not that great. When they are given quizzes and assignments to be assessed in the classroom most (not all) do pretty decent. Should I curve the grades or keep them as is?
