There are lots of good free apps out there...but here are a few of my favorites:
educreations
brainpop
Just go to app store and look up free apps for kids and pick a few to start with

I use a lot of what has been posted but I've also downloaded a lot from an app called appsgonefree. They notify you every day of free apps.

I had previously posted the following.

Although our school doesn't have iPads, I use mine with my students. I use an Elmo and LCD projector for some of the apps (readcalouds, visual timer, or to share an app that the students can later download for free or purchase at home).

For teacher use I use:

Common Core (great reference for grades K to 12)
Google Drive
Pages- word processing
LevelBook- for recordings of running records
Visual Timer- similar to Time Timer, but free!
Too Noisy-noise level monitoring
Stick Pick- use any of 3 modes- Bloom's, Bloom's Revised, or ESL
IBooks- for read alouds
Kindle App- for read alouds
Nook- for read alouds
Storia- ebooks

Hear are some Math Apps I have shared with students and hope they would buy at home, but most are free:

Geoboards
Hungry Fish
Zoom
Coin Math
Grade 2 math
Counting Board
Pearl Diver

ELA-
Sentence Maker- be sure to check the settings so you can adjust difficulty level, probably k-2 level
