I teach third and one of my workstations is Mystery Word. I place magnetic letter tiles in a baggie that spell out a word or phrase. They have a recording sheet to write all the words they make. I mix it up. Sometimes I use a recording sheet where they must sort the words they make by syllables and sometimes I use at sheet where they sort by number of letters. You could also change the sheet to reflect spelling rules learned for the sort. Really, its like two skills in one. They have to make words then sort them in a particular way. I have an incentive if they figure out what word or phrase all the letter tiles make. Good luck!

What about having the students work on understanding parts of works (prefix, suffix, root-words)

I do not teach 4th grade, but those are some ideas. I do what the PP does and use a book by Patricia Cunningham

Or what about using some resources from "Making Words"

For 4th grade. Do you have a worksheet or template for your activities?

Thanks
