Over 60% of my class has a chronic absenteeism problem. Yet, the principal marked me ineffective on students' growth. How can you mark a teacher ineffective when the students do not come to school on a consecutive basis? This is utterly ridiculous!

home or not, but it is something you can show that you are contacting parents of the absent ones often. It is ridiculous for sure!

This seems totally unfair and it is against the evaluation rules here in IL. If I had a student with less than certain percentage of attendance (I think 90%) they didn't count into my evaluation. I had three students not counted for that reason. One had missed the equivalent of a whole quarter of school.

What I would do is ask the principal, in a non-confrontational way, how you can improve your performance on student growth if the kids don't come to school! Maybe he has some suggestions?

Have you talked to your principal about this issue. It's totally unfair for you to be marked ineffective because the students don't go to school. Perhaps you can come up with some type of reward system to get them to come to school. You can work with the students individually and set up goals with them.
