Hi,
I'm new with the dialy 5 and am so excited about trying this out with my students next year. I'm changing from 5th gade to 3/4 so I'm a bit nervous. My question is our district is requiring us to use the Scott Foresman Reading Street program which comes with leveled readers. I'm having difficulty figuring how does studnet choice fit in the dialy 5 or do I just give them the skill according to the basal? We also have basic vocabulary words and strageties for the week, do the students use those skills for their daily 5. And lastly, in writing, the program as suggestive writing activities, do I follow these, or do I leave more open-ended. I'm taking the CAFE class in August and am so excited for the class. I would love to get some things started before hand because I need to preparefore the combination class. Any advice would be greaty appreciated. Yours truly (drying out in Seattly) - Crackerjack!

I am with Tiff on the Lucy Caulkins - my kids rock at writing with it and I teach some tough ones!

I do 3 sessions of Daily 5 each day, but my kids have a choice from all 5 areas. I do use a chart of my own to keep track of where my kids have gone, and I also have one for the kids to use. It really helps the kids organize themselves and learn to plan their days.

I think the key to the Daily 5 is to take it slow! Don't throw too much at them. Setting up the routines is so important, just like the sisters say!

As far as using a basal, I think you could still use it...I do mini lessons in between my stations and you could do the same thing with your basal instruction! Watch the DVD about the daily 5....I watched it and started & stopped it and took notes...totally studied the whole thing...it was awesome! I think it's easier than the book....I guess I'm a very visual learner!

Any ideas how to set up with a self contained classroom. My kids are cross-cat. I do have a class para.

I have been using Daily 5 for two years now. My students go to 2-3 a day depending on our time. They each of checklist were they mark what they have gone to. They have to go to all 5 before they can go to any of them again. I love Daily 5 and hope enjoy it too.

I use a mixture of my Basal and the Daily 5. I am experimenting with it this year and so far I LOVE it!!! I use my Basal for the ideas for my mini-lessons. I look at the skills for the story and we use those for our 10-15 minute lessons. I also am working with Daily CAFE which hits on a lot of the skills from our Basal.

So far it has been working really smoothly. I can't wait to start it up next year at the beginning of the year, it has been so much fun and the kids love it too!

Does anyone have a chart that I can use to track the rotations for 3-4/ day?

I have doen both my best recomendation would be to still do a whole group lesson, and shorten the amount of the time in rotations to maybe 20 minutes, then you can still work with your small groups. Also alot of times those programs have spelling, or phonics that go with it so that could be your word work.

This is the second year that I have worked with The Daily 5 and this year I am implementing The CAFE Menu as well. So far I like it but I struggle with the writing piece because I feel like there is no room for wole group writing instruction but I am getting there in creative ways. It is also great for planning for a sub because the kids are sao into their routine. You do have to stick to it and practice, practice, practice!

Hi,

I am also a "new" 2nd grade classroom teacher who has taken the Daily 5/CAFE training and is eager to start using it! However, I also have to continue to use a basal reader. I do not have any support within my building, except that my principal has given me the "go ahead" to try the Daily 5.

Have you gleaned any wisdom about how to combine Daily 5 and a required basal?

Thanks for asking all the questions! I just finished reading the Daily Five and am trying to figure how I will fit it all in next year. I use the Lucy Calkins writing so I will keep that part separate, but am anxious to find ways to incorporate the other components.

I am a first-year teacher and teach 2nd grade. I am using The Daily 5 in my classroom similar to the way you are. I have 4 guided reading groups and I want to meet with 3 a day as the students are rotating throught The Daily 5. I also teach Lucy Calkins separately. I am having trouble setting up a rotation schedule so that each group rotates through all. Do you have any advice?

There is a discussion regarding D5/Cafe in the Peony Room. Lots of great advice,tips,lesson sharing, scheduling help, pictures, etc. from teachers who have implement D5 in their rooms already. Check it out! I've gotten a lot of information there. I'm starting D5/Cafe this year and feel much better about it because of all the information I've gotten from everyone in the Peony Room!

I just got the book too and am excited to see how this works in person. For those of you who are new and have questions and would like to look at schedules, you should visit the Peony room. They are experts and super helpful.

I use all 5 choices in my second grade class and the students love it. This past year was our first year doing it and it was great! I loved that the students made their own choices of what they were doing. The group I had worked so well on Daily 5 even subs couldn't believe their eyes. It was such a great experience for the students. The program builds independence and creates a sense of owndership in learning for the students. I can't begin to tell you how much my students loved it.

I love the Daily Five, too. I used it for the first time and absolutely love it. Finally something that really works. My kids were well disciplined and I wonder about a not so well-behaved group, whether or not it will work or not. I still LOVED IT! YOU ARE SO RIGHT It is all about MODEL, MODEL, MODEL!

I think our school day is a tad shorter than in some places (8am-2pm)but here is what I think I'm going to do. I haven't finished my summer professional reading and I'm going to a workshop in July that my change my thinking.



8:00 - 8:20 Shared Reading / Morning Message
8:20 - 8:30 Word Study
8:30 - 9:00 Mini Reader's Workshop [Compr. Strategy Mini-Lesson followed by Independent reading (while I confer 1-on-1)]
9:00 - 9:45 Writer's Workshop (Mini-Lesson/ Independent Writing/ Sharing)
9:45 -10:45 Guided Reading with Daily 5/ Stations
10:45 - 11:15 Lunch
11:20 -11:30 Recess
11:30 - 12:30 Math
12:30 -1:15 Resource Classes (PE, Art, Music, etc.)
1:20 - 1:50 Science / Social Studies
1:50 - 2:00 Clean, Pack & Dismiss

Note: You could take out the 30 minutes of RW and add it to the Guided Time to make 90 for the Daily 5. You could Also take the Shared Reading & Word Study Time and add it to math to make 90 minutes instead of the 60 min that I have in my schedule.

I would desperately like to see sample of schedules how how math and daily 5 and all of the other things we are requried to teach has been worked into other classrooms. I love this concept and just can't seem to come up with a balanced program. 90 minutes of readng, 90 minutes of math, 45 science, 45 writing, computer lab once a week, and the list goes on. If anyone has something that works well and is wiling to share I would love to see what works for them.

I do the Daily FIVE. Next year I plan to revamp Work on Writing though. I neglected that area, so I don't believe my students did as well with that. They have the option to do 4 of the 5 choices, although most could do 3 a day because of meeting with me for guided reading group as one choice.

I'm hoping next year to do three choices a day, because I'm hoping to meet with 3 groups a day rather than 4. I had to meet with 4 this year because of the variety of reading levels.

For Work on Writing I'm going to have them do more of a reading response than writing stories, because we have Lucy Calkins for writing.

It sounds like I might not have ESL or Special Ed, so I might be able to have some mini-lessons in between guided reading groups/The Daily 5 as the Sisters do.

I too am starting this next year. I went and observed a 1st grade teacher implement the Daily 5 and this is what she did which worked out great. She had her 15 min. mini lesson and then sent her kids off to chose one of the Daily 5 (she had all five set up), the kids would form a line at her desk and they checked in with her as to where they were going. She allowed them to stay at a spot for about 20 minutes and then rang a bell to change. They again lined up to check back in. Every 20 min they would change. The students go to do about 4 rotations. Sometimes she would do another mini lesson at the end. I am excited to start implementing this next year. The sisters will be at the Reading Conference in Sept in Orlando FL which I"m already signed up for

Everyone does there own take on it. I teach 2nd grade and am going to try it like I mentioned above because it seemed to work. All her kids were on task.

I have a reading workshop time in my afternoon where I teach strategies (with help from Growing Readers by Kathy Collins) and then kids have their own private and partner reading time. Is that time meant to be merged with the Daily 5 since there's Read to Self or do you keep them separate?

I tried it for the first time in my 2nd grade class at the very end of the year sort of as an experiment. I gave them the choice of all 5, but we only did 2 sessions per day. I also gave them the choice and did not have a rotation, and for the most part that went ok. I had to keep track of their choices on a clipboard and remind them of what they needed to do (since it was spread out over a few days), but that wasn't too difficult and they really did well with it.

I had done traditional guided reading with work stations up until this point and they handled this change well. I was surprised at how many of them wanted to just read to self, too since we have a silent reading time every day after lunch. Since it was the end of the year, we didn't work on stamina as they did in the book, but since they had done work stations they were pretty good at it. I would like to try to implement it fully beginning next year and really build up stamina as they do. I'm just not sure how to fit them all into my schedule either and I'm a little nervous about trying something new when we will have a brand new reading series to contend with also!

I also did Daily 5 in my room this year...BUT I did not ever do the writing portion during the Daily 5 time. We do Lucy Calkins in our school and my writing was always separate from my reading (which is what I called my Daily 5 block.)
I did manage to get 3 sessions in each day, 4 is difficult, not many people have that much time each day. Each session was about 30 minutes long.
I did not let my kids choose their session - I set up a rotation on my board and then rotated the 4 parts, read to self, read to someone, word work, and work on listening.
I also did receive MANY compliments on my classroom routine from other teachers and my administrator. It really works well, but you have to take the time at the beginning of the year and MODEL, MODEL, MODEL, just like the book says. Even if the kids seem bored with it, do it anyway ~ it will set the tone for the remainder of the year!
We are in our last 2 weeks of school and my kids are still doing the Daily 5. They love it...and so do I!!

I did the daily 5 for the first time this year...this is what worked for us:
I did have all daily 5 as available options each day and gave each child a "tracking report" every Monday. I would remind them at our first meeting/mini lesson that if they "went to writing and read to someone" yesterday---they should pick somewhere they had not gone to yet to start with today. I was adamant that I would keep the "choice" component and not go to scheduling ---it worked beautifully. Nearly all of my kids could do this completely independently. 2 needed support!

I usually had 3-4 "sessions" per day---- I fit in all 5 at the beginning of the year because the stamina is not built up yet.

I also have to tell you that I absolutely LOVED the Daily 5- I am sure that I will use it again next year. I got lots of compliments the focus and meaningful work going on in my room!!!!

Thanks for asking the questions. I just finished rereading The Daily Five tonight and was having a hard time crunching the numbers to make it all fit into my day. It's good to know that 3 out of the 5 is normal. I too would like to see someone's schedule. I don't have a basal, but I do a lot with shared reading, writing workshop, reading workshop, etc. and I can't give those up.

At our State Reading Convention this past spring I had the luxury of seeing the Sisters in person! They said something I found interesting... they said that most classrooms K-3 are having children only do 3 of the Daily Five each day and intermediate classrooms only do 2 a day.

Is that true with all you true blue Daily Fivers out there?? And, if it is true, do you still let the students chose from all Five or do you just give them 3 a day and that is it?? I am so eager to try the Five this next school year in my newly appointed class of 2nd graders! My reading coach just ordered the new DVD the Sister's made called Cafe in the Classroom. We watched a snippet at the convention and I fell in love with it. I can't wait to watch it and implement its ideas! Anyone see it yet??

If anyone has any advice about how to use the Daily Five better especially with a required basal please let me know. I would also like to see exactly what a day looks like for your room. Perhaps a lesson plan that someone would like to share of how much time you spend and what you do during your small groups and whole group time and more would be great!
