Edit: not sure your grade, but could you ask the parents to describe the sound if they ever sit in on the Meet?

Have you checked to see if your mic gain is up too high? That creates a shhhhhhh static-y noise on many of our students' Chromebooks that everyone but that user can hear and is LOUD. Click where the time is, then click settings, then click "audio." The mic volume slider should be right in the middle. If it's turned up too high, you will have an issue.

Hi, this happened to me on one of my first Google Meets. The students heard a screeching background noise while I didn't hear anything. Thankfully, one of the parents complained about it or I would have never known. Looking back I had other devices close by with mics on, I now wear air pods at all times and all is good.

Hi -
I found that on my laptop, when in Google meets, I need to close shared tabs before I go back to the Meet; the "use this tab" or what ever the message is on the original tab is not good enough, I need to close or stop sharing tabs. I can look between tabs, but I must close shared tabs before returning to the meet.

I hope this makes sense.

Thank you all for the great suggestions.I know the sound is real because I tried to make a video for my absent students and I can hear the noise. In the video it sounds like very loud static with an occasional thumping sound. I know the sound is real with the students because they rip their headphones off or hold their ears. One parent told me it is a high pitched thumping. Sometimes it is just a continual thumping sound and the kids can barely hear me.

I’ve used my AirPods occasionally, but now that I think about it I don’t think the noise was a problem that day. I will try those again as well as trying to put my cell phone/other technology in another room.

The tech department said they can swap it out on Thursday of next week. I really hope I can find a solution before then because otherwise it will be a long three days of teaching remotely!

Thank you all again for the great ideas. If there are anymore suggestions I would love to hear them.

Are you using headphones? Sometimes if the cord isn't plugged in all the way it can make a noise that only others hear.

Also, just because it's new doesn't mean it's not a dud. Can you do a meet with another adult and see if the same thing happens? If so, you might want to ask IT to swap it out and let them figure it out.

In audio recording, the nemesis is what's called "noise." It could be interference from another source, or it could just be a lousy, unshielded onboard mic.

If moving other electronics out of the room doesn't work, try hooking up a separate USB microphone. Another option is a headphone/mic combo.

Good luck isolating the sound.

Nobody is even in the house with me.

I’ve even switched rooms and sat by the router.

Unfortunately our technology department is clueless about almost everything.

Are there any other computers close by that are using their microphones and/or speakers? If so, this will cause feedback.

Try being in a room by yourself.

Your It department should have a better answer than "I donít know".

I have a new acer chrome book 315 that was provided by my school. When Iím in a meeting on google meet my students keep hearing an annoying noise. If I leave the meeting and rejoin it is fine for a few minutes.

I have closed every window/tab except the one I need for the meeting. Iíve tried unplugging the computer from the outlet. Iíve unplugged my mouse. Iíve reset my internet and tried the internet in a different state as well as someone elseís house. I cleared my cache multiple times.

Iím not the only teacher having this problem. Our technology department is clueless. Any advice before I lose my mind?
