the responses. I don't know who they got to fill the absense but I will hopefully one day get a job with this district. If this is the only way to get in (working for the outsourced company and doing the job of a full time teacher for peanuts) then maybe I will have to "pay my dues" so to speak. But, aren't we already paying our dues as subs working day to day for such a low wage. And in my case applying to various teaching positions and never hearing back??

Time will tell but I'm not young so I feel like time is seriously running out and maybe I should just try to get a job in another field but at this point I don't even know where to start.

The district I work for never hires the subs who slave for the district, short or longterm, into fulltime positions. Just doesn't happen. If you want a fulltime job, it pays to be related to somebody who's already an employee. Otherwise, forget it. I wouldn't worry at all about not taking that job. I suspect they were trying to put you on the spot. Good that you didn't let them.

I wouldn't worry about it. I HAVE bent over backwards for a district by taking a low paying, high stress, long term sub jobs and was still never hired. I was even told I did a good job in the assignment. If I could go back in time I would never have taken the long term assignment. It didn't help me at all.

I’m not sure this was a bait and switch, if the secretary didn’t specifically say the interview was for the LA position. It seems as though it was more a case of guilt by the sin of omission, by being vague about the subject of the interview, knowing you’d assume it was for the position you’d just applied for.

Either way, it stinks, and since they’d already hired someone else, you would’ve been on the hook for a low paying, stressful job. Since you showed interest in full time employment, they were hoping you’d take the temp job so they wouldn’t have to work to find someone who would take the job.


I wouldn’t waste another minute worrying about not taking the job. I don’t think it hurt your chances at all, because for the district, it’s simply a business decision. They thought you might agree and save them some time, but now they’ll have to try to fill the temp job. No big deal.

Whether or not you should be concerned would depend on how you presented your decline to the interviewer.

If you were polite and logical , there should be no concern. They will understand why you declined.
If you displayed any subtle attitude, there is cause for concern, but I doubt that you did.

Something seems fishy. Why set up an interview the day before when you planned to hire someone else I don't think I would want to work for a school like this be it a sub or FT teacher position.

Why did they set up an interview if they had filled the job?
Good reason to turn down the job.

Don't beat yourself up. You have good reasons for declining.

I personally don't think it helps or hurts to do long terms prior to getting hired on full time.

Hi:
I signed out for this.

I don't know if this is the right group to post this but I currently am a substitute teacher. I applied for a Language Arts position through a local school district that I sub for. Where I am the substitutes are outsourced.

So, the school secretary called me and said are you available to interview tomorrow and although it was short notice and a surprise I said sure and made it work. Anyway, what caught me off guard was that I expected the interview to be with the district but when I got there the principal told me they gave the job I originally applied for to someone else and asked if I could do a long term but only through the outsourced sub agency. I never apply to those that are outsourced because the pay is terribly low and the work load is that of a regular teacher and then some because I wouldn't be familiar with any of the students.

Long story short I turned it down because it was just so unexpected and I didn't want to be overly stressed like that for little pay for the next 6 weeks and I feared that if I didn't do a perfect job that they would never hire me. But, now I wonder if I shot myself in the foot because I didn't bend over backwards and help them out? Any thoughts or advice? Feeling a bit bummed now wish I had more time to think it over.
