I figured it was like they want you to be looking for the winner. As PP said need to look to see if you won. It is to get more people on the site.

I'm sorry you didn't see that you won, and I know you aren't complaining. I think the rules were clearly stated, and it was a way to have more people check the busy board daily. I would have been so sad if it was me and I missed it, so I sent myself an email each day to check PT and see who won! I liked it. I would've liked it better if I won, but, can't win em all!

GraceKrispy 09-13-2014 10:00 AM

I knew you weren't complaining! I just wanted to let you know where to find it. I was hoping I won, so this is the first contest I paid attention to how to get the prize (I haven't entered a contest before).

The same day thing is only if it's a live contest. I think this way is good because we had lots of opportunities to enter (the threads stayed up for a while).

If you feel strongly members should be surveyed, you should write to the Editor and suggest it. I don't think this is like education at all in that "teachers don't really have a say," because these are gifts given out, not mandates we have to follow. Completely different thing. If I want to win a gift, I choose to play by the rules set forth. If don't have to. If I have to follow specific mandates that I don't feel are beneficial for my students or my life (lol), I want a say in that. So I see it very differently, but you should pm Editor if you'd like the contests to change.

and was puzzled at some of the responses. I am on PT every day, at least for a few min. here and there, and I did NOT see the notification either. I'm sure I just didn't read carefully about having 24 hrs. to respond or where to find the winners, but oh well .

Just wanted to let the OP know that I didn't think you were complaining and I did not see the notification (message that I needed to remove by clicking the x) either. I am not saying it wasn't there , but have been busy and maybe I unconsciously clicked, .

grtlaks 09-13-2014 08:06 AM

I wasn't on here complaining that I missed it and didn't win. I was saying I couldn't find where to look. I actually was online the day I "won it" and was posting. My intention was that someone explain where to look so someone else could win it. Yes, it was my fault for not reading more thoroughly and remembering to look at the top of the board. I never said it wasn't! (yes, I am disappointed but such is life!)

I did too but this contest specifically said you had had to check the busy board and reply to the post.

It stinks that she didn't see it but she clearly did not read the rules of contest. That's her fault not proteachers.

As previously stated, I think I've only participated in a handful of contests.I understand the concept of must be present to win, then it needs to be same day drawing.

As I said, I think members should be surveyed on the contests, but just like in education, teachers don't really have a say...

I agree with everything GraceKrispy said - both times! You rock, Grace!

To grtlaks, I am sorry you missed your opportunity to claim the prize. I understand how disappointing that must be.

I totally disagree with driven to teach. Like in any contest, the people giving the contest have a right to choose what their parameters are. The parameters for this contest were very clearly stated. An ipad mini is a valuable prize! I think it's perfectly reasonable to expect people to check back in and to work a little to earn it. Maybe if the editor sees that people are ungrateful or unhappy, they may choose not to have any contests at all. I doubt people want that, so let's be grateful.

Hifiman 09-12-2014 06:35 PM

It was a way to get more traffic and it extended the fun. I understand being upset about being selected and not winning due to claiming the prize, but it did say in the instructions when and how to claim it if won.

smannes 09-12-2014 06:26 PM

I don't mean to sound snarky but seriously? It was clearly stated in the post. It is not the Editor's fault and they shouldn't need to contact the winner since they stated from the beginning that you had to check the Busy Board and claim by 5pm the following day.

I was very offended when I saw how many times they were trying to give the same prize away, especially now since they do not personally e-mail you. They have access to that information, why do contests at all, if they don't try to personally contact you... Unclaimed prize.
I figure it's like a "must be present to win" type of thing. After all, the prizes are meant for those who post, so I guess the expectation is that you can check in on the board at least once in the 24 hour period. I don't have a problem with it. I noticed they don't even say the winner in the title of the thread or in the first few sentences (so you can't "hover" - you have to actually open the thread) and I'm guessing they are "rewarding" board participation in that way.

Editor... Think it may be time to do a survey on contests.

I haven't signed up for many contests.

Redundancy 09-12-2014 04:08 PM

I didn't know either, but now I do. Whenever I see another contest, I am going to make sure I find out the deadline and look THAT DAY for the announcement!

Sorry you won and then lost. Maybe next time, your luck will strike again!!!

tchrrx 09-12-2014 04:02 PM

Oh! I always figured you would get a PM too. It's nice to know that you have to actually look to see whether or not you won.

desert flower 09-12-2014 03:31 PM

I've never figured out how you contact someone else. How do you do it? Does anyone know who the 2nd and 3rd people are who also won it?

kahluablast 09-12-2014 02:04 PM

I assumed you would also get a personal message, but good to know you don't. I imagine it is very disappointing to find that out after the fact, but it was in writing... I would be kicking myself, I know. A $50 gift certificate wouldn't be nearly as hard to swallow as an ipad mini.

Good luck next time.

Dr. A 09-12-2014 01:57 PM

GraceKrispy is correct,
Also, the message on Every page remains until you click the "x" to delete the contest notification. I don't delete it so I can have a daily reminder.

GraceKrispy 09-12-2014 01:51 PM

Sorry you missed it!

The information about where to look for the winner was in the link posted at the top of EVERY board on PT. It said something like "IPAD CONTEST" or something. I think it was right under where you now see "Proteacher Help: Navigation Icons." Then on the link, it said that winners would be posted on the Busy Board, and it said when the winner would be posted and how long the winner would have to claim the prize. Then it was a sticky thread on the Busy Board (it stayed the top thread) that announced the winner. Each winner was up for about 24 hours, I think, before a new winner was chosen and announced.

4th time was the charm- Calla Lily claimed the prize.

grtlaks 09-12-2014 01:40 PM

So I have a question for those of you in the know. There was the IPad give away, and I won it, but not really since I missed the deadline. The only reason I knew i won, was two very nice people messaged me to let me know, but it was too late to claim it. Two other people have won and not claimed it either. My question is, where the heck do you look see if you won? Obviously if three of us missed it, others might miss it as well. The only reason I knew is because of the messages and I followed the link. Maybe if someone can share where to look, someone might be able to win it I tend to visit the same boards so I claim ignorance about where things are on here!
