Glad you figured it out! Maybe next year, try looking into buying the disc at Target or Staples when it's on sale. Depending on which version you need, it should be way less than the $130 you ended up paying this year. We buy the Home and Business software, and I believe I paid $80 this year with a coupon. The only other cost was, I think, $24.95 to e-file our state return.

I'm just wondering if you accidentally clicked on some kind of deal where they give you the refund faster and then they collect the actual refund from the IRS? Because your refund should come from the U.S. Treasury not Turbo Tax. And they shouldn't charge anything extra, just whatever the software costs. Go back and look at your return. If you did it online, then I have no idea how that differs from the software, but it still doesn't seem right.

Please check into that amount, it doesn't sound right.

I noticed ours was quite a bit more than usual this year, but it was still about half the price of what DH paid to have his done at H&R Block.

think Turbo Tax is having to refund money because of charging incorrectly.

annie_g 04-06-2020 12:19 PM

That doesn't sound right. I've used turbo tax every year. I buy either the disc or the download. I've never been charged anything else. I would definitely follow up on that.

I always buy theTurbo Tax disc, so I don't have an additional fee. But, there are two places Turbo Tax will charge you right when you finish up if you're not paying attention. The first is their audit protection. The second is with filing. My state charges a fee to file online, so Turbo Tax offers for me to pay the fee and file online, or print my return and file it for free by mail.

I wonder if it was something like that.

Make yourself a note to check out free filing next year. Freetax u.s.a and credit Karma were both free this year.

Even though itís a grrrrr, Iím glad you figured it out. Thanks for letting us know.

Gromit 04-06-2020 09:45 AM

That seems unreasonably high. Are you sure they didn't take out too much? I would look into it more. That's almost as much as we pay an actual accountant.

Iíve always just paid the $60 fee. I have no idea what happened this time. There was a processing fee Iíve never paid a few other things.

Lilbitkm 04-06-2020 09:31 AM

I had a feeling thatís what it is... sucks they took that much.

Iím always able to use the free version since my taxes are quite simple and I donít have state taxes in my state.

mhugs 04-06-2020 09:26 AM

We down load the program. Then after it is all figured and we are okay with it before they send it or make available to print we pay with our credit card. This year it was $60.00. They do have questions where they offer extra help for a fee -need to be careful.
Extra charge for working with live person.

Weíve been going to the same accountant for tax preparation for going on 40 years. Last year we paid $130. That included a sit down appointment to discuss any changes we should make and advice (now that weíre retired).

Wow. $130 is a chunk of change, especially if you had a relatively straightforward income.

KeyKid 04-06-2020 09:13 AM

Just curious: did you use the software installed to the computer or their online site? I've always used the CD/coded software so I pay the purchase price but no fees after that. $130 seems like a really high fee.

GreyhoundGirl 04-06-2020 09:05 AM

Apparently the money was my federal tax refund from Turbo Tax.

Turbo Tax took $130 for fees, etc. Iím irked. Theyíve never taken that much money before. I may be looking for a new way to do my taxes next year.
