Yeah, like telling him that he could've had recess, but you "didn't want to".

Recess and gym special are the only two consequences in some instances. Kudos to you!

I simply thanked him for his honesty (that's critical because I don't want students lying) and say that since he did as he wanted during my class time he can give up his time during recess. I know many disagree with taking recesses, but I believe in hitting where it hurts

lily74 04-11-2013 05:59 PM what do consequence do you give when a student says I don't want to"? I have a student who has started saying that regularly and nothing seems to work with him!!

At least he was honest!

Maybe you can use the "I didn't want to" excuse the next time he/she want you to do something for him/her.

So we were silently reading as students finished their math work. I find one student isn't doing math or reading, he's got his desk emptied out everywhere. I ask what he's doing and he says cleaning his desk. Normally, not a big deal; but, we just cleaned our desks out yesterday before moving our classroom seating around! I asked him why he didn't do it yesterday and he responds, "I didn't want to." Oh, the looks on my other students' faces as their mouths dropped

Some kids learn real fast you don't tell me you didn't do something just because you didn't want to; unfortunately, this one has yet to grasp that concept. As irritated as I was with the disrespect, I had to stifle the laughter at the reactions to my other students!
