I just wonder what you were thinking when you thought an event with school children wasn't a school event? I mean, I understand that it is run by an outside organization, but you were taking a school sponsored group, so it automatically falls under your organization's rules and guidelines anytime you work with them. Have they talked to you about it? I would put in writing a letter outlining that you in no way sponsored her activities after you were originally told she was not allowed. I would also put in writing when and how you talked with her about not being allowed to help anymore due to not being board approved (what does that mean, exactly?) and that you had no knowledge or approval of her contact with the girls to teach them a new routine.

Then I would wait and see what happens. Volunteer to give the coaching job away, and make sure you are very familiar with the rules and guidelines you have signed to agree. I think that if they want to get rid of you, they certainly are within their means to do so. But it doesn't reflect on your classroom success and failures, so....

Thank you for the advice, everyone! I talked with my principal about it, and she's just as tired of hearing about this as I am. I took care of the issue with the girl, and all seems to be well. The athletic director came and gave me some updated schedules, and didn't say a word about it. I'm sure I'll hear about it when it's time to renew my contract, but as of right now everything seems to be okay!

Is so fraught with stupid, petty drama. I think it's a blessing if you can find a way out of it without any ramifications for your teaching job. I think it would be really stupid if you lost your teaching job for this.

Be honest with admin. Telll them that you wanted to be involved and you took the job. It makes sense that you wouldn't know about someone needing board approval. Tell them that she texted the girls without you knowing it. Then see if they offer suggestions. It's an honest mistake on your part, and if admin really wants a cheer team at the school they would make sure everyone is board approved. IT's one mistake and I doubt that they would hold it against you.

Hard to know what will happen, but kahluablast's suggestions make excellent sense.

I'm surprised that your school district didn't give you some basic training about do's and don't's as a coach. In my district, just about anyone who is working directly with students needs to be screened.

It sounds as if this is a young alum who doesn't understand the boundaries between the cheerleaders and coaches/advisors. She should have been given some guidance before she started working with the cheerleaders, but you lack the experience to do it. Among other things, she should not have been texting the cheerleaders and she should not have been "sponsoring" a school activity without approval and supervision.

The parents were right to be upset. Good luck to you--and follow kahluablast's advice. Now.

I am a cheer coach at the school I work at (I don't have any experience, I took the job to become more involved.) I am also a first year teacher. Teaching has been going fine, but it's the coaching that is making my life miserable right now. Over the summer, I had a graduate come in and teach the girls a routine for competition. I had no idea that she had to be board approved, so I continued to use her. A few weeks before competition, I was told that I could no longer use her because she wasn't board approved. I agreed, but stupidly brought her to competition because I thought since it wasn't a school related event, it was okay. So, after competition, I figured that her involvement was over, and she would leave my girls alone. Well, that's not the case. She texted the girls about learning a new Christmas dance behind my back, and now an angry parent has gone and emailed my principal, the athletic director, and other superiors. I don't care about losing the cheer coach job, but I am terrified to lose my teaching job because of this. Is this a possibility? I hate coaching, and I have no idea what I'm doing. I know what I did was stupid, I just want to keep being a teacher.
