I have seen a lot of interns get hired in the recent past, and it makes no sense to me because here you have to fill out a waiver saying that you are hiring someone not fully qualified because you couldn't find a more qualified person for the role. Where I am seeing a lot of interns is at low income districts and charter schools-they are doing it to keep costs down. Its that plain and simple-they actually advertise that they are seeking interns. If they interviewed a fully qualified person and didn't hire them then this means they are lying on their documents-but somehow they just keep getting away with this. I would love to see them get held accountable for it. The kid deserve someone seasoned who is going to do a better job. I am sorry that you are on the receiving end of this.

And I am not trying to hate on interns folks- but everyone knows that when you first start out you are not as good as after you have had some experience, and time to reflect and hone your skills. When they hire people with zero experience, not even student teaching, they are placing someone less effective in the job, plain and simple.

No not the job I was talking about leaving for. Different job I interviewed for a few months ago.

Unfortunately the friends of the guys at the top get first priority no matter the qualifications. The cheapest and best suck up gets a job in crummy schools. How many of us would want our surgery done by someone who was a friend of a friend but not trained in med school? I'm sorry Violet4. Get out when you can and look for your dream elsewhere.

Was this a different job from the one you wrote about considering leaving teaching for? I hope that one, if it is a different opportunity, is still in the running for you. Good luck. I hope you can find a better situation. Being passed over is never a good feeling.

Violet4, I am sorry. I sat in on a few interviews last year from the hiring point of view and was like why aren't they hiring Person A?

You're right, I know that's how it goes often. This school talked often about how much they liked me last year so it doesn't make sense but I know what you're saying.

Violet4, I am sorry to hear that you did not get the job. It must be incredibly disappointing. Without knowing the exact nature of the position you were hoping to get, I've noticed that there's a lot more that goes into getting a job than working in the building or being credentialled. At my previous school, admin would have preferred to have hired someone outside of the building even in cases where it made no sense. Credentials help but aren't essential (depending upon the job). Sometimes it's the "soft" stuff---what does admin think of the job applicant? How does that person get along with others? How would their leaving the position impact the school? I know you know all that but....it's not always straightforward.

I was passed over for something within my building. Also I'm sure they're working on their degree as it is a requirement. But to not hire within and to give it to someone with fewer credentials seems unfair to say the least.

What credentials are required for the job? For many teaching jobs an academic degree is preferred, along with education courses for certification.

I hope that one of these days soon you will find the right fit for your skills and needs. It must be frustrating to have your Hope's dashed down.

My degree is in Political Science, with a minor in History. I've been teaching successfully for 15 years.

I found out today went to somebody who doesn't even have an education degree.

So apparently credentials don't mean much anymore, nor does seniority.
