Just curious, when do you all get your rosters?

At my past school district, we got class lists before we left for summer. Usually, sometime in the last two weeks of the school year. Now, those could change based on kids moving in or out, but for the most part, we knew who had.

At my current school, lists aren't sent out to teachers until the first or 2nd week of August! Now, we also have an learning management system, and last year I was able to see my list at the end of July because I checked the learning management system, but we weren't notified that rosters had been entered on there. I just happened to log in and there it was.

Personally, I prefer to know ahead of time. I hate waiting! I log into our learning management system daily just to see if my class has been added! I like knowing!

I am always excited to get mine, too. We usually get ours a week before school starts, but there are last-minute changes. I have learned the hard way not to do any labeling of my popsicle sticks (with students' names) before the first day of school.

At my old school- a few days before school started.

Now at my new school we got them on the last day of school for staff. However, theyíre not set in stone and could change over the summer. Mine is less likely to change bc I teach a specific schedule ( preschool) and Iím the only teacher who teaches this option. My program has a waiting list so if anyone moved/ changes their mind their spot will be quickly filled.

When I was in a smaller, 2 section of each grade level school, getting our class list before we left for the summer pretty much told you who you'd have in the fall. There were very few changes.

I'm in a much bigger school now, and although we did get a 'rough draft' of our class list before we left for the summer, I've logged in to check mine and it's already changed a lot! I'm sure it will change even more before school starts, so it really doesn't matter that we got them before the last day of school. I'm not putting any stock in who's on my list at this point.

We get ours the day before school starts. With all the technology we use, this is ridiculously late, because we have to enroll students in a multitude of programs.

We just got ours, as our principal has one more week before she is off for most of July. Of course, we can't tell anyone, and we know it could change with move-ins or move-outs. I only know a few, so I'm not too worried yet.

Usually a week or so before school starts.

booklady57 06-21-2018 06:23 PM

Usually the afternoon before the Meet the Teacher day the next morning. Now that the records are online, sometimes we can see them a little sooner. It always makes for a mad dash to put names on things before school starts.

I've always wondered how people got to know their student's names so early. We don't have time to send greeting letters, call, or visit students prior to the beginning of school.

I wonít get a roster until regisrtation day. My P assingns classes as registration is approved. So since I have the fiest section of K, Iíll get the first K student who registers. The next section will get the next student, this continues until the classes are filled.
I donít think it fair to assign classes at random, but I donít get to make the decisions. It makes for very unbalanced classes.

we get ours the day before school starts, if we are lucky

SusanTeach 06-20-2018 05:09 AM

We only get ours about a day before the parents find out, which is Meet-the-Teacher (2 days before school starts).

It's frustrating because we like to have things labeled, including kids' desks, so everyone is rushing to get to the ONE laminator on the same day.

They do the lists in May, since we're performance-based. However, that changes with new students and with the state test results for the upper grades. I still wish we could see it sooner than we do.

It's whenever my grade level decides to do placement. We usually sit down and deal the registration cards at the last possible moment, so we don't have to keep adding and divvying up as new kids register.

Haley23 06-20-2018 03:04 AM

Our secretary just sent them out last week. We return the first week of August. However, we have a fairly transient population so nothing is really set in stone. We have a "back to school night" where students are supposed to drop off their supplies and meet their teacher the day before school starts. We are always scrambling with all the extra kids that just show up that night (without enrolling beforehand) and then figuring out who isn't going to show up within the first couple weeks of school.

Veggirl 06-20-2018 02:54 AM

Except for kindergarten, all other grades get their's on the last day of school for the following year. Students also get a letter stapled to their last report card letting them know their teacher for the following year. Poor kinder teachers don't get their's until just before school starts though.

mrsf70 06-20-2018 02:53 AM

We get ours the day before students start. I would much prefer at least a couple of days to look over names and throw together seating charts, but I've learned to work with it.

Sprite 06-19-2018 03:44 PM

I will only get them the day school starts. However because I teach SPED I pretty much know who I will be getting.

Kinderkr4zy 06-19-2018 03:35 PM

We get our offical list 2 days before school starts. But, we can make a copy of our tentative lists right after we do placement. It has been known to totally and dramatically change (loud parents maybe, or total reconstruction after a few kids move in and throw off the numbers, balance and sped cluster).

I have my tentative list now but I might get a very different one July 25th-2 days before the first day of school.

sbslab 06-19-2018 03:31 PM

We get our the day before the kids come in. What a way to end the vacation...a flurry of work.

DiamondGirl 06-19-2018 03:16 PM

We get our rosters the day of open house in August.

WGReading 06-19-2018 03:13 PM

We get our rosters the morning of our back to school open house, which is usually 2-3 weekdays before the first day of school. I don't think our whole district does it that way. I'm at a high mobility school and the rosters change a lot all the way through the first 2 weeks of school. We basically get the roster on that day so that families can find their classrooms at the open house, but in terms of classroom prep, we don't label desks or materials until a few days into the school year because of the # of enrolled kids who never actually show up and the # that get added in early on.

Ima Teacher 06-19-2018 09:42 AM

It varies. It used to be on opening day for stafff, which is the day before kids start. One year I figured everything our on open house night as kids came to visit.

Now we get them maybe a week before. The elementary schools sent kids letters last week. Now parents think all schools should do that. Secondary is a whole other animal.

Singvogel 06-19-2018 09:03 AM

In the old days, we got our lists early enough that I could send out welcome postcards to my new Ss.

Now, we don't get them until a day or two before school starts, and then they start changing immediately based on loud parents.

Gigi814 06-19-2018 09:03 AM

I have always received mine the week before school starts.

Idaho4me 06-19-2018 08:42 AM

3-4 days before students start!
