My fifth graders use writer's notebooks during workshop for collecting ideas and trying out strategies but they do not draft in them. In the past I have used loose lined paper for drafting but it becomes an issue because pieces tend to get lost, out of order, etc. I'm wondering if anyone can share what their students draft on? Thanks!

My fifth graders have composition notebooks as their writing journals. I tell them to do their sloppy copy (draft) in this book and skip spaces. Drafts are done in blue pens. They revise and edit in the spaces using a red and green pen. I had the same issue with loose paper, that's why I use composition notebooks.

I have always used spirals. You can pick them up at Walmart for as cheap as .15 Their drafts stay there all year, and we are constantly referring to them.
