My school is looking at social studies books for grade k to 5. I teach 4th and 5th grade socials studies. We are departmentalized in grades 4 and 5. We got a sample of kids discover. It seems ok. I have used some of the free on line articles and printed them out for my class. The magazines have the topics that we cover but it seem light on content. In the fourth grade we start with NJ and then go to the regions of the USA. In fifth we pick up with the Native Americans across America and then European explorers and the early colonial history.

Does anyone have a good book that they use? Ours was Hardcourt Regions of the USA and Developing a New Nation. They don't make it anymore and the books are falling apart.

We've never found textbooks that cover all or most of the standards,. I've have used studies weekly newspapers for over 15 years. Our state is perfectly aligned. There's an online component that is very useful too. Reasonable in price as well.
