I like to use graph paper. I also have students write the first number with decimals. When they write the second number to add or subtract, I like for them to write the decimal first, underneath the previous decimal point, then fill in around the point. This way the decimals are lined up and the graph paper helps to keep numbers in their correct place value.

I make my kids highlight their decimals by drawing a straight line with the highlighted straight down. It seems to have helped.

My students are struggling with remembering to align the decimal points when adding and subtracting whole numbers that contain decimals. Any suggestions?
