You could just put a piece of paper on their desk and have them just color or write about whatever they want. This does give you a very quick assessment of who knows their name/how to spell first and last, etc. For some though they'll be done in 10 seconds and others will take the entire 20 min and still need more time . I'd plan a writing/coloring activity and perhaps a simple math activity, not a worksheet but something using cards perhaps or soft sided dice. Roll and add up or turn over 2 cards and add up using numbers 1-10 only. I know you want structure but it doesn't sound like the time will lend it self to that. Maybe even a place to have them peruse books.

I think more of easy center type activities (1-2 only) will work and allow you to mingle amongst them.

I like that color sheet. Thanks for sharing it. Good idea to have a color sheet to work, or fun books to read. I need structure that first day as well. Our kiddos will be with us for 4 hours on that first day. We get to serve breakfast and lunch before they are dismissed for the day. I also like to start wbt rules #1 Follow Directions Quickly.

I did a "I'm a Second Grader" coloring sheet and then took a picture of each child with theirs as they finished throughout the day or the next few days. It doesn't have to be this one, but this one is free and it took the kids a while to do it. They came out cute!

Math manipulatives in baskets on the floor.

Bell for 10 minutes change.

Coloring sheets with different types of animals. Have the students choose which one to color. This will lead to a discussion later. Have a pile of crayons to share.

Circle space with Books on the floor to read.


Invite one student to talk to you while you wait for another child to arrive.

I did play dough one year. Each table group had a different sign. They could rotate between tables.

*Create something that represents what you did this summer. Share/Discuss with your tablemates.

*Create your favorite animal. Share/Discuss...

*Create something that represents YOU. Share/Discuss...

*Create something unique. ShareDiscuss...

Not sure why I haven't done it since. The kids loved it! I may have to do that this year.

I used to give my second graders a small container of play dough on day one. Whenever we had just a few spare minutes with nothing to do, we had a “play dough break”. Sometimes I would make more or buy more around February or March. Generally, they were careful to keep lid on it.

Book baskets on each table?

Simple coloring sheets ripped from dollar store coloring books.

Is this your first year in second grade or just first year with this situation?

How about a profile pic that they can decorate to be them? You could have extras ready for kids you don’t anticipate.

Play dough for kids to make things with.

You could have some math manipulative out for free play.

Our kids have supplies, so I have them put supplies away.

Do you have any ideas for morning work for DAY ONE? My kids have a 20 minute staggered entry (continuous flow), so it needs to be independent. Some students will be in my room all 20 minutes before official start time, and some students may only have a minute or two. I have a plan for other days where I can teach the procedures and such, but what can I do on day one? It's my first year in second with this set up. It needs to be completely independent because of the staggered entry and that I am supposed to stay stationed at my door for those twenty minutes.

Also, please nothing like "word search with all of the kids' names" or something. My area is so transient that I could have unexpected kids and no-shows on day one.
