Well, in my state it's a state standard. Students are expected to fluently recall in 3 seconds all the addition and all the subtraction math facts by the end of 2nd grade.

They're supposed to be answered automatically, not figured out. What I've been learning. (I'm new.)

I'm assuming to visually figure out facts?

If so, that takes too long and it's *ahem* timed. The point is to get fluent- bettering their own score from before.

Hello PT,
I have a parent whom had a child in second grade last year. Now their other son is in my class this year and they are questioning the math facts timed sheet. They are asking me why I am not allowing them to draw on their paper to do this timed sheet. I've never been asked this question in 14 years of teaching.......any suggestions?
