give them a timeline and six or so statements to place on the timeline.

use an "I do, we do, you do" sort of lesson where you use the smart board to move and place the items on the timeline in order, highlighting the clues and thinking aloud as you do so.

Then, do a second timeline together, with the students helping you to find the clues to highlight and telling you where to place the clues.

Finally, give them a timeline and four to six entries to place. They could either draw a line from the items to the place on the number line, or cut and paste, depending on time. They could work singly or in pairs.

If you've got time, do a similar lesson before hand to see how it goes.

Help! Middle school teacher who has been moved to third grade and is trying to prep for her first formal observation. Any suggestions for successful lessons you've taught? I teach SS (we're working on maps and timelines) and SCI (life cycles of frogs).
Thanks!
