Might also depend on age of your students. Some might write fluently enough for a journal, research paper, or creative writing. Some may do activities with spelling words, and some might work on legible handwriting & letter formation. Also, what genres do you have at your grade level? Friendly letter? Postcard? Grocery list or ????

Hope this gives you an ideA or two?

Hello! I am a senior student intern right now, but in the classroom I am interning in, we just started Daily 5 last week. I am in a first grade classroom and we have the reading daily 5 choices grouped together on one table and the writing daily 5 choices grouped together on another table. The students know that if they start with a reading daily five one day, they have to start with a writing daily five the next day. For the writing daily five area, we have choices such as writing in a class journal, writing a note to their teacher, as well as a seasonal writing option. We have several class journals students can choose to write in with prompts on the front such as: "Write about your weekend." or "What is your favorite book and why?" With the class journal, students can respond to the prompt on their own, as well as read through what other students have said already.
Hope this gives you a few ideas!

I have them practice their CAFE strategies with a graphic organizer, questions or activities to go with their GR book and/or independent reading. They have a journal and reading folder and post it notes in their book box.

I have a separate writer's workshop time.
