I would LOVE to go see and hear them. They have inspired me with their books and their website videos, so I can only imagine how great they will be in person. Please come back and let us know how it goes. And think about all you'll be able to do over the rest of your career with what you learn. Lucky you!

I hope you enjoyed your time with them. I love their program and philosophies and they are great to see in person.

You may be able to use some of the things in your new setting (10 steps to independence, structuring strategies within CAFE, etc.).

I hope your school year is better than you imagine and you're able to touch these kids' lives!

I went to the first day of the workshop today and it was great. They also gave away two books, a set of chimes, a timer, some reading windows and a fidget type toy for those barometer kids. Everybody got one of everything. That was a nice surprise.

Tomorrow is the day they will focus on CAFE which I only dabbled in last year so I am really looking forward to it.

I'm not sure if I would be able to implement the Daily 5 in the DAEP. They just moved the classroom to a new school and the administration is basically rewriting all of its policies. In most DAEPs, the kids basically sit at study carrels and do assignments all day with no privileges at all. However, this admin is trying to make it a more positive environment which thrills me.

Right now it might be a little odd to start with Daily 5 because currently I have one student and a paraprofessional. The student is already getting a lot of one on one instruction.

I think I will try taking the Ten Steps to Independence and apply it to the behaviors that he needs to improve before he returns to his regular class.

In the meantime, I'm taking lots of notes and imagining applying what I am learning to my first grade class from last year.

Thanks for the words of encouragement.

I think it is exciting that one you are going to see the 2 Sisters and two that you now have a job! After reading your post, I could sense your disappointment in thinking that you may not be able to use your new found knowledge, so I thought I would put this out there for you to think about. Could it be possible that the DAEP setting may be a good place to implement the Daily 5/Café ??? (That is if I understand correctly that DAEP is a program for students who have gotten into trouble and need an alternative educational environment.) I am guessing that the students who are sent to this alternative setting are not on the same academic levels, which seems to be a big reason the 2 sisters designed their programs (differentiated abilities within one room). Therefore, could it be possible after assessing the students' needs, you can come up with lesson plans for groups of similar needs and then your Daily 5 activities will give the students who are not with you a chance in small settings to have hands-on (instead of traditional stay in your seat and work) experience with academics and some maybe needed alone time (during Read to Self) chances. Some times the students who are in these situations need a change in learning methods previously tried with them in their old settings. With you being excited about your new teaching methods, it could be possible that you could be The One who can implement this "alternative" teaching style to these students and bring them up not only in their academics, but also in their actions / behaviors to become more successful in society instead of the path they are headed toward. Best wishes for a good year! Also, I hope you have fun and enjoy your experience seeing the 2 Sisters!

This summer I was so excited to see the 2 sisters were coming to my hometown. I bought tickets for the event even though I did not have a job yet and had no idea where or what I would be teaching this year. Got a job as a 4th grade reading teacher. Not my favorite grade level but at least it was reading. Two weeks into the school year, I was involuntarily transferred to DAEP. Not exactly a great environment for daily 5/cafe.

I am trying to remain excited about the workshop. I've wanted to go to one since 2008 but it's going to be bittersweet knowing I won't be able to use what I learn until at least next year. Sigh.
