I love love love my smart board. I got mine 2 years ago. Our Service unit had a class which I took and that helped but you can easily learn everything you need to know from you tube tutorials. Also once you get the gist of how it works the more you play the better you get.

I also found couple of guys who do podcasts that are fun and helpful but not so much the actual running of a smart board but how to make lessons and useful little tips and tricks.

Start with SmartExchange, you can get all kinds of lessons that you can download. Then play with the lessons. (Ask your administrator if you can add the software to your home computer because I practiced at home.)

When you create your own lessons, it's similar to power point. Very user friendly. I took a class to learn about some of the advanced features but that was after using the SmartBoard for about 4 years! The rest was by trial and error.

Hello - Here are two helpful sites:
http://www.bristolvaschools.org/mwar...Activities.htm
http://exchange.smarttech.com/#tab=0
There are also youtube videos available.
Also, believe it or not, there is a Smartboard for Dummies book!!

My advice would be to pick one or two new activities to try and get acquainted with how to create the Smartboard lesson and imagine how you can use it in your classroom. I recommend the Balloon Pop, anagrams, and I use it for Jeopardy all the time (there are templates available through the Smartexchange).
It can be a lot of work, timewise, to create Smartboard lessons, but if you can uses them year after year it is worth the time. They are modifiable, so you can tweek them yearly if needed.
Good luck!!

I don't have a classroom or a Smartboard, so I cannot advise you about this. I just wanted to encourage you a little. Our county set up web access where teachers could share files for Smartboard lessons. It is for school employees only. Maybe your school system has done something like this? Also, our county offers summer training workshops for such things as Smartboard users. Maybe you could check with your principal or school board professional development team to see if this is the case at your school. One last thought, when actually using the Smartboard, by 5th grade, I would assume your kids have been around Smartboards for years and can help you in a pinch.

So I will be teaching 5th for the first time in September and I have a smart board in my new classroom, yay! But...I have never used a smart board and am a little overwhelmed. Where should I start? Are there tutorials I can watch? How do you use yours?
