Hifiman's Message:

which would you go with, the Air or the Pro?

I've always done Pros, but I don't need the Touch Bar and 512 gb drives put them on par with each other in terms of processor. Air would do just fine, but it's not a Pro. Still, saving some money would be good. I feel just like Sheldon choosing PS4 for or XBOX (stupid problem. XBOX of course!)

I have the new MacBook Air. I didn't get the one with the bigger storage. I have everything stored online so didn't need the storage. I don't game so I am not sure if that helps any.

I had to buy a new MacBook back in February when *someone* in my house spilled coffee on it and it died. It was 8 years old, so it wasn't the worst thing ever, but I did have to go to the store and buy one that day. I ended up getting the Pro - it's been a champ during distance learning (with the help of a second monitor). I thought the Touch Bar was dumb and wouldn't ever use it... but I end up using it often, even with an external keyboard connected.

that I first got when I got the 2018 Mac. It has everything, including a hard to come by VGA output, which I need to connect to my school's projector.

I might wait until tomorrow morning for Apple's Black Friday event. They're giving a $150 gift card. I hope that is on top of education pricing.

This is what I ordered on the pro.

Apple M1 chip with 8‑core CPU, 8‑core GPU, and 16‑core Neural Engine
16GB unified memory
512GB SSD storage

It is so hard to figure out, but this should be good for me. I don't do much with video editing, and I'm pretty consistent with backing up to an external hard drive. I'm more concerned about only two ports when they are used for everything - even charging. And I ordered a USB-C to USB adapter. They keep changing things!

If I go with the air I could get 512gb storage, 16gb RAM and the same cpu as the air for about $50 cheaper than a pro 512gb storage and 8gb RAM. RAM is not supposed to be an issue but still nice to have more. 512gb is nice to have but I have 256gb now and it’s fine if I keep video editing in check. Still 512 is really not much better for video editing either...I keep going in circles.

I have been looking at the new Macs too. What size storage do you get? Any other recommendations?
Thanks for any tips.

No trade-in. I was tempted to try to trade in the MacAir I use, but it belongs to the school district! It will be interesting to compare them side-by side. I had originally ordered the MacPro, then the MI chip came out on the first day or the time period mine was supposed to be delivered. Since it hadn't shipped, I cancelled that order and ordered the Pro with the MI chip. Surprise - it was $150 cheaper!

Contact them about the trade in timing. If you order online, they won't promise delivery in less than a month. I ordered mine on November 12, and it just shipped today, so it will be earlier than promised. It's coming from China. Figures. Order from an American company, but made in China.

Dutchgirl, any chance you traded in an older device? I want to trade my current pro and they are giving me a great price for it compared to others, but they say I have 14 days to send it in. I hope that means after I receive the new one because I can't send this one in yet.

My MacPro with the MI chip just shipped today. The closest Apple store is 350 miles away, so I'm trusting delivery. Fingers crossed.

I decided on the Pro instead of the Air after researching. I'm not an expert, but reviews recommended the pro over the air, so I went with it. You can turn off the Touch Bar, but I figure I'll learn and get used to it! Don't forget to get the Education discount!

I have both. My MacBookPro (about 10 years old) has died. I was wishing I could get help with retrieving Word files from its hard drive. The Apple Store is 50 miles away and I am not going out except to grocery. I miss the CD drive on it because it was a low cost way to share files. The new one probably doesn't have the CD drive and fewer teachers have one now.

The MacBookAir is perfectly adequate for me.
