Try Read Works. org - They have K-8 CCSS leveled reading comprehension passages and it's free to sign-up. Since she is on a third grade level, I think this site will help you. Try also easycbm.com - they have progress monitoring assessments in math and reading comprehension for grades K-8. It's free also. Perhaps you can have her read a chapter from Twilight before you meet her again for tutoring and then give comprehension questions and review vocabulary. Do a google search for Twilight to get comp questions and vocab help. I hope this helps.

I'm an early childhood level teacher who has only had experience teaching students in grades k-1, and I have to tutor a 7th grade student for one of my graduate level classes. I'm looking for some suggestions of activities to do with her for our first meeting together and am struggling with coming up with ideas that she would find interesting. I've never worked with middle level students so this is completely new to me. From what I know about this student, she's passive aggressive and is strongest in Social Studies and math, but struggles with word problems. Her reading test scores have dropped at the end of 6th grade and she's in a reading improvement class which has caused her behavior problems because she feels labeled.
She keeps a reading log and is required to read 30 min each night, but only logs 15 min. Her favorite book is Twilight because it's a romance novel. She prefers books that take her into the reading picture. She was administered a picture vocabulary test to measure receptive vocabulary and listening comprehension as an indication of cognitive processing, and she scored in the moderately low range. A quick assessment showed that: her strength is in word attack and decoding skills, sight vocabulary is on a 5th grade level, and her comprehension is on a 3rd grade level. The inference and critical thinking questions were more difficult than the text dependent questions.
I want our first session tomorrow to be informal and try and gain her trust in me, but I also want it to be something that I can gather information so that I can set appropriate goals for her. My only concern is that I'm not familiar with this age group and was looking for suggestions of things I might want to look into.
Thank you so much for your help!!!
