I hope you have a great school year. Middle school is a challenge all of its own. This year I will work at a charter school teaching 7th and 8th grade ELA. Good luck to us both!

Hi,

I am new here! I am a returning teacher who took some time off to raise a family, and I will be substituting K-6 this year.

When I left teaching, there was very little technology in the classroom, so I am trying to catch up. I'm glad I found this forum. ☺

tigerdragon 08-04-2017 08:08 AM

This will be my first-year full-time teaching. After many years of subbing and lots of LTS positions, I've been hired as a 4th-grade classroom teacher!

Deana67 08-02-2017 11:52 PM

This is my 3rd year teaching as a SpEd teacher. My first year was spent teaching first grade- I loved it. I love my students. Super excited about beginning the National Boards process. Hope to get invaluable information here.

pastafordays 07-30-2017 06:55 PM

Congrats to all new teachers on this thread! I know we have our work cut out for us with a steep learning curve, but I believe community with other teachers, both newbies and veterans, is a step in the right direction. I was hired for 3rd grade, but the teachers at my school decided to departmentalize in May, so I'll be teaching Science and Writing to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade.

lildeby 07-29-2017 04:03 AM

I will be teaching ELA in a charter school. This is the first year they have tried having 3 departmentalized classes and the first year they have had 3 classes of 3rd graders. I feel my team will work well together but we are all a little lost when it comes to organizational systems that work best when rotating 3 classes. We like the idea of a moving clipboard that helps keep track of student behavior.

weinerdog 07-28-2017 01:54 PM

I taught many moons ago but have been home with my kids for a while now. I subbed last year and just accepted a job to be a middle school push-in Special Ed teacher! So excited!

ccstwelds 07-26-2017 04:09 AM

Technically this is my second year, but it will be my first full year. My first year was sort of "trial by fire". I teach welding, I worked in the trade for 37 years, then this opportunity came up. I always wanted to do this at the end of my career because of my welding teacher. I was prepared to go to work when I graduated. I noticed young people we were hiring weren't as prepared as I was. I had interviewed for this position previously and at that time wasn't hired. The school called me about 7 months later and asked if I was still interested, interviewed again and and was offered the position. I know my subject thoroughly, the classroom educator part was a new learning experience. I was the 4th teacher hired in a short period of time. The class of seniors I inherited were a handful. I must have been the polar opposite. I believe in a balanced classroom to shop work. They were never made to do book work and they were really behind on their certification exams. Of course I was the Bad Guy, they were disrespectful, destructive and one offered to punch me out. I started to rethink what career choice. The seniors graduated in Jan. I received a new junior class, and what a difference. They couldn't compare me to anyone and teaching became fun. I not only taught them welding but fabrication also to apply their skills to real world projects. So far, they have bought in and police themselves when a problem arises. I'm still learning. I'm currently taking the college courses I need required for my certificate. Also need to pass the praxis 1, I've taken it once, passed the reading with a 188, flunked math and writing. Sorry for the long intro.

Congratulations! Nine years is a long time to be looking for a position. My goodness, George W. Bush was President when you began your search.

lissylu012 07-24-2017 05:18 PM

I have been teaching for 17 years. Pre k for 7, and first grade for 8 years. This past year I taught Kindergarten and I loved it the best!!! I hope you love it too!! Good Luck!!

NCTeacher76 07-19-2017 01:05 PM

I graduated in December 2016 and took an interim 3rd grade position in January. I just found out I have a contract to return to the same classroom. So, I still feel like a new teacher. I struggled, but learned a lot, and love the team I am blessed to be with!

I'm so excited!!

AnEagerReader 07-18-2017 06:05 PM

Congratulations to all of our new teachers!

Any advice would be wonderful.
Thanks!

After 13 years of homeschooling, I'm heading back to the 7th/8th grade ELA classroom this fall! I have 2 preps, so this should be fairly manageable.

PushInTeacher 07-17-2017 05:17 PM

Congrats, new teachers!

This will be my first year as a full-time teacher in public school. I'll be a push-in, resource teacher in a middle school. Can't wait to learn here!

Congrats on your position! My oldest son begins teaching this year too. I don't think he has joined PT yet even though I told him he should. He will be teaching history at a high school. Probably 9th grade for the most part but he doesn't know the specific grade or area just yet.
Hope you have a great 1st year!

cali11 07-15-2017 09:05 AM
