Yesterday I was the leadership meeting and talking with the person who's dept. chair for PE. All freshmen have to take dance. Dance!

She calmed me down by saying it's not slow dancing. No, that would've been a thousand times better. No reasonable person has the rhythm to dance. It's unnatural. I wouldn't do it.

A school I taught at had dance for the fifth graders for a semester. It was not part of PE but mandatory.

I was so excited when I got to Jr Hi and discovered I could do modern dance for PE. Finally something without a ball!

OTOH my granddaughter was horrified to discover dance was part of the 4th grade curriculum and DH almost got kicked out of his private school for refusing to attend mandatory dance lessons.

Yep. over a decade of square dancing! When I was in elementary school, I played the "boy" part a few times. We had too many girls

Dance is physical, so why wouldn't it be part of Physical Education? I think it's great. My daughters can't throw, catch, kick, or run.......but they can dance!

In 4th/5th/6th grades my kids' P.E. teachers taught them all the 'party' dances - the Macarena, Cha Cha slide, Cotton Eye Joe, etc. Both the boys and the girls seemed to like it or at least not mind it too much. I can't imagine anyone in the Northeast learning square dancing.

we all had to take square dancing. Tragic.

In college I had to take folk dancing and interpretive dance. I actually liked the folk dance. I did not like the interpretive dance but was good at it, and easy A.

I also had to take swimming in college. I was one of the very few dumb kids, who on the first day actually swam as well as I could. To pass the class each student had to move one or more levels up. After a few sessions I realized the majority of the class faked not being able to swim and then just passed the test at the end with no effort.

Ha! I had to take square dancing and ballroom dancing. I guess what didn't kill me made me stronger! On another note we had to do a 2 minute floor routine in 9th grade gymnastics. All I could do was forward rolls so I took the F. PE could be a unique form of torture.

I remember taking modern dance.

JanetL I think we must have been in the same class!

The only dance I took in school was square dancing. That's all that was offered. I absolutely loved it, but I love dance in general.

I agree with this. It doesn't come naturally to everyone and can be very embarrassing to some students. I think effort is important, but if they have no natural dance ability, they shouldn't be penalized for it. That's how I felt about basketball. I was terrible at it and hated every minute of it. I hope my P.E. teachers graded me on effort and attitude, not on ability.

I took Archery. Channeling my inner Katniss in high school

As someone who doesn't dance, I feel sorry for any kid who will be graded on any aspect of dance. Dance can be beautiful and enriching to some, but it can be humiliating for others.

We always had dance as part of PE in high school. We had folk dances and square dancing. One dance had us in a circle coming to the middle. We came into center chanting "We hate PE!"
The teacher was mean and awful, but I guess we were mean and awful right back

GraceKrispy 09-04-2019 08:35 PM

13 years of mandatory, daily PE growing up. 13 units of square dancing

Actually, I think I didn't have to square dance Junior or Senior year, so just 11 years of square dancing.

ANY kind of dance is a thousand times better than the endless "dosie-do" and "promenade left" and "bring your partner right back home."

JanetL 09-04-2019 07:58 PM

I took Folk Dance as a PE class in college.

jov 09-04-2019 06:59 PM

I remember doing dance for a week or two every year in high school PE. Square dancing and line dancing, I think. It was the only time that we had PE together with the boys. That did not go over well with the boys, to say the least!

LaFish 09-04-2019 06:57 PM

I wonder what the students will say and do.

2teach2 09-04-2019 06:53 PM

I would much rather have taken dance for P.E. than swimming! I wish that were an option a hundred years ago when I was in high school!
