I don't like those sub days when the teacher is testing. Yes, I am a little more nervous having the teacher popping in and out. But it isn't that as much as almost feeling like neither of us wants to step on the others toes. Reminds me when a child is with both parents and grandparents, sometimes they get away with more. I have become more comfortable over the years with this situation, but it does take getting used to.

The problem with figuring out "normal behavior" is that it is different for EVERY class. Not just they dynamics in the class, but the teacher's style makes a difference. I have been in classrooms where the teacher doesn't give them an inch to be creative at all, and then I have been in a classroom that is the opposite, where they have the freedom to do just about anything.

It's funny, "Who are you today?" never bothered me. - I just thought they were using it to include me in the conversation.

I generally like when I am in for someone and they have time to introduce me before going to their meeting; I think it leads to better behavior. But they rarely stay long enough for it to be weird.

I did have one teacher once who was absolutely NOT happy to have a sub - they had informed her late of the meeting, and it was to run into her prep, so she was kind of protesting. She actually started the class herself while I sat at her desk, and didn't leave until almost the time I was supposed to drop the kids off at their special. She was careful to tell me it wasn't personal, but I did feel really awkward.

The times I really get frustrated are when the TA gets all upset because I teach different than the teacher in Kinder. So everytime I teach Kinder. I talk with the students during a morning meeting and we go over the classroom rules and then I explain that I may not teach the same way as their teacher and that is ok. I am hoping the TA will 'get it' I also explain that we will do all the assignments the teacher has for me to do. Many classes do not have a TA though or the TA is so great I don't have to worry about her interupting me to tell me 'that is not the way we do it" Students will say that too and unless it is really important like: "we have to be in the cafeteria at a certain time for lunch" then I just tell them "It is ok if we read a story before recess." Students need to learn to accept change and the different way teachers teach. Flexibility is part of teaching and a good thing for students to learn too.

I get that all the time, and I've subbed for so many different teachers and on so many different days that I've had times when I couldn't remember who I was "supposed to be" that day! Especially when it's the fifth assignment of that week!

When I read all these posts, I had to smile at Gottaread's comments on "Who are you today?" I get that a lot as a sub. I, too, feel like telling them my real name instead of the teacher's name whom I am subbing for.
On Friday, I was in a K room, when the teacher popped in and out. While it is disconcerting I just kept teaching as best I could. You can only be yourself. Also, I teach it my way- as I am sure every teacher does. So many different teaching styles out there. As a sub, you have to use what you know works for that class at that moment. You have to be flexible.
So, remember, just be yourself and don't worry about what others will think.

You hit a nerve! I HATE when other teachers ask "Who are YOU today?" Hmmm....well last time I checked I was Mrs. Gottaread! That question, though I know they mean to be cute, is so depersonalizing. I am often tempted (since they never introduce themselves!) to ask "and who are YOU today?" But they wouldn't get the sarcasm, I'm sure.

As a newly graduated teacher who is faced with beginning as a relief (substitute) teacher in a couple of weeks, and who is somewhat daunted at the prospect, I like this. Thank you!

I use the opportunity to tell the students...Mr/Mrs. so and so is right here in the room/building/next room/in their office (Then I point to their teacher) I hope that we won't have any problems because I can call them!

I always get annoyed when other teachers ask me "Why does _____ have a sub? What are you doing here?" when I am in for a teacher who is having a mentor or other "in school" work day.

As a classroom teacher, I always try to clear out quickly if I have a sub come in for the 2nd half of the day because I know it would make me nervous to be in their shoes.

However, if I was there testing and had to come in and speak to the children about their behavior, it would not be the sub I was upset with or judging, it would be the children. I teach my expectations and expect them to follow them even when I'm not there. But we all know how human nature is.

It has to be so hard to sub and understand what is "normal" behavior for a class and to set expectations appropriately.

If you didn't have to send someone to the office, you would be a miracle worker. I have a very rough class and a sub that can handle them is awesome. If you had to send someone, that wouldn't put you on my "do not calL"

or Para, whatever the district calls it, I have the same "nervousness." Ironically, I subbed as a TA today, something I am usually hesitant to do because (a) the pay sucks, (b) usually the instructions are minimal, and (c) you are Always in the room with a regular teacher who may not like how you do things. I Hate feeling awkward around the kids, especially at the HS level since my confidence is half my classroom management style. I still try to be me, but it does make me feel self-conscience when the teacher is in the room. I second guess everything I do and look at his/her facial expressions to check for a reaction. See? I Would Never confess that to anyone else other than you all on PT!

I agree - I also feel very uncomfortable. I tend to be shy around adults, as well, so that does NOT help my situation! However, I usually do OK, one or two have complimented me and/or asked for my number.

I taught for a Speech Pathologist and she sat at her computer all day in this small room! The kids would come in and say "Why do you have a sub?" But luckily she had me just play games with the kids and the only group of kids I had a problem with and had to be firm was when she was at lunch!! I had never taught for a Speech teacher before so was a little nervous.

and no one has to go to the office, you are on my call again list. Another plus for me is if the kids draw you pictures! I was testing this week and went in and out of my room. I thought my sub had better classroom management than I did!

I was in a kindergarten class on Monday...the teacher was in the adjoining office that has windows to her classroom, doing F.A.I.R. testing. She was so nice, but I felt like I was being watched the whole time, she even came out once or twice to tell her class to be quiet, or to line up nicely etc. I thought "Oh we go...she'll never ask me to sub again" but lo and behold, at the end of the day she asked me for my number in case she needed a sub again!!!! So you never really know what a teacher is thinking, even if they are in the class with you...all you can do is do your best and hope for the best!

Sometimes it can be stressful (like being observed) but today it was a good thing. Ironically today I also was a floating sub for teachers in meetings and whenever a teacher was in the room, behaviour management was that much easier because they won't try things they normally don't do. I didn't mind! I guess it depends on the circumstances.

I have subbed for teachers while they come in and out of their classroom. The key is to be yourself, which I find to be the least stressful. As I always tell them "I only know how to be me so, what you see is what I am like all the time". Seems to work, have been back to sub for them again.

Today, I was a floating sub because some teachers were having meetings. Anyway, one of the teachers I was in for stayed in the room for a good part of the time that I was in there. I always feel a little weird when this happens and tend to get a little nervous (this is a school that I really want to get a job in). Today, I started tripping over my words and lost my place in the book She was practically sitting right behind me during a one-on-one lesson with a student. The teacher was doing something else but I just felt like I was being observed.. it made me nervous!

I have subbed for this teacher before and she is nice and I never have any problems with her but I just hate when the teacher stays in the room...

I am curious to know how the rest of you feel when this happens.
