Thank you for the great idea to have a separate Google Meet for the TA. I will do that tomorrow!

Thank you - that is a great idea to be certain I have control of all instruction in my classroom.

Make sure that you have access to monitor what she is doing if she sets up separate Google Meet sessions for small groups. You, as the teacher, will be ultimately responsible for whatever the assistant does in the small groups. Be sure you give clear expectations to the assistant about what is to be accomplished in those groups. If possible, have those sessions recorded.

Thank you so very much. I really appreciate your perspective as a TA.
Thanks again!

I am a teaching assistant teaching in a fully remote setting right now. When there is full group instruction, I sit quietly and take notes to make sure I understand the material to help the student I am in charge of. Then I work with him in a breakout room during asynchronous time. We are using zoom so breakout rooms can be made. I do like the idea of setting her up with her own google meet to help strugglers though. Also tell her not to interrupt while you are giving full group instruction. I would never dream of doing that. Mute her if she won’t and maybe that will send her a message.

Thank you! I will create break out rules and continue to assert that I am the teacher.
Thank you again!

My educational assistants are fantastic! We’re also using Google Meet... I trust them in either Break Out Rooms or their own Google Classroom.

Set VERY clear expectations and mute if necessary. You’re the teacher, the kids’ scores are YOUR responsibility. Make sure your TA understands that and go from there. Best of luck to you!

What is the TA supposed to be doing in your Google Meet during the lesson? It's unclear to me what their job/duties would be in that scenario.

I would suggest to have the TA work with a small groups of students, using their own Google Meet. It should not be hard for the TA to set up their own Google Meet, where they are the host, and then have the kids meet with the TA there. That would keep them from interrupting you in your google meet.

You could send them some students who are struggling and need extra support, or have send them the higher achieving students and the TA can work with them on some enrichment.

Ha ha !!! I should do that!! I do that often with the kids!!

eagles23 10-28-2020 10:58 AM

Can you mute her??

WoolieBear 10-28-2020 09:33 AM

Has anyone had this situation? My TA is consistently interrupting me during instruction and taking over the lesson.

We are in virtual distance learning right now so I cannot have her do other projects outside of the room. We are using Google Classroom Meet (Breakout rooms do not work like Zoom).

I have spoken to her about this but it keeps happening.

I greatly appreciate any thoughts/advice!
