That would be wonderful! How did you make the connection with the teacher?

Years ago, when I was first starting out, I got some of the things I needed at a teacher yard sale. I remember being so excited. A friend of mine retired recently and had a yard sale, but very few people came. She even advertised at the area schools, two nearby colleges which have teaching programs, student teachers... She said that she only had a few grandparents and parents and that they just wanted books.

I was able to give away many materials to a first-year teacher who was going to work in a Catholic school in inner city Boston. She took a tremendous amount of my personal materials off of my hands.

If they have summer or after school programs in your city they may be more than willing to help you out.

I am glad you are thinking of the things you are using now. I think that is what helped me get rid/donate some of my stuff before I left. I donít know a particular place/another school that would accept educational materials.

I offer the teachers at my school to take anything they would want. A few picked a couple of puzzles, games, and a small puppet stage. I gave most of my pictures books, games, and a few supplies away to friend of a friend that will be home schooling her son. I also donated other books, holiday decorations, and storage containers to Goodwill.

Isnít it amazing how much stuff you can collect in a short period of time?

Thanks for your suggestions. I don't have a Facebook acct so I never thought of that, but I'll see if our union has one.

I hadn't heard of Freecycle. I checked it out. I was excited because my town was listed, but when I looked further, it hasn't been active for a long time. I'm going to see if any of the nearby towns have an active one.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Do you have a Facebook page for your teacher union? Perhaps using social media would help to get the materials to the right hands. How about Freecycle?

Is there a website to get information or a place where teachers can donate educational materials they don't need anymore? I'm looking for a place that would take those items and donate them to needy schools.

At the beginning of the school year and end of the school year, teachers clean out and reorganize. Many times they have educational materials that they have personally purchased, but don't need anymore. They might be switching grade levels, teaching new curriculum or some even retiring. Many of the new teachers don't want the stuff. We have a table we put the free stuff on, but eventually, most of it ends up in the trash. What a waste!

I know that I am getting close to retirement. So when I head back to school to set up my classroom, I am keeping that in mind. I will throw away junk, but I hate to think that centers I've created, children's books I've collected and educational materials I purchased would end up in the trash. I have also accumulated shelves of teacher resource books over the years. My goal would be to donate that stuff to a needy school that would benefit from those things. I can't afford to personally ship the stuff anywhere. Is there a place or organization that does that? I think other teachers in my school would be interested.
