Is classwork done with help/support?

I would say homework at 10% is kind of high.

I am a fan of standards based grading. However, I would say that tests/projects (things that show students mastery of standards) should account for the majority of their grade.

Good luck!

I completely get it! (I'm a math person because I can't spell.)

I like what SoCalTeach posted:

10% Homework
40% Classwork
50% Tests and Projects

I do something similar to your second choice with my lower-level math class, because I give daily class work points to encourage students to work the whole period. In my honors classes, tests and quizzes are worth 85% of the grade, with small slivers for homework and class work.

The big thing you want to look out for is not assigning a category a weight and then only having 1 or even 0 grades in that category. The other tricky thing about weighting is that students typically don’t understand how it works. The most common thing I encounter is students thinking that turning in more homework will boost their grade when they already have 100% in that category. I tell them that they could get 1000 more homework points but it still wouldn’t affect the grade and they just find it hard to fathom.

I teach 5th. Here’s my breakdown:
10% Homework
40% Classwork
50% Tests and Projects

Thanks,

District says HW should be no more than 15% of the grade. I thought that was too high. I have this same argument with myself every year.

But, I'm going to ask anyway.

Just so you know, I'm an English/History teacher for a reason.

I've decided to change my weights for grading. I'm thinking of two possibilities...
1. 10% Homework and 90% All other Assignments
2. 10% Homework, 45% Classwork Assignments, and 45% Tests/Projects

Which would be better? Any pros or cons? Any better ideas????
