knock your P upside the head. I hope the police got involved. I am glad to see you have talked to the union and are taking their advice.
You should not have to tolerate that and neither should the other kids in the class. I hope you feel better soon and this is resolved to your satisfaction.
I am wishing you a big fat check that makes it so you don't ever have to return to that and the kid goes to juvey.

The advice you were given not to discuss the incident is probably wise. Sorry we won't be getting updates, but the important thing is to protect yourself. And not feeding the rumor mill is part of that.

I hope that you are feeling better, both physically and emotionally.

Get to the hospital or doctor and follow what everyone else posted here.
Please let us know how you are. No teacher deserves to be assaulted. I understand the poor kid doesn't have a clue what he did, but you need to protect yourself.

My union rep advised me not to discuss the issue with anyone, and I’m going to take that advice, even though I hope I am anonymous - thank you for your support. This is a wonderful community.

Just adding my support here. You have received excellent advice and hope you are able to,follow through. So, a concussion and a black eye don’t shout “dangerous person” to your P????? Sounds like he’s afraid to confront the issue.

So sorry this happened to you. You didn't expect to be punched.

I have worked in lots of settings with violent students. One thing that is done is to have the student clean up and turn in the activity. When they refuse to do that there is a standard to follow that the student needs to be informed about ahead of time. So, this system in action would be something like this, for example,

1. "Everyone, In 5 minutes we will switch to X activity"

2. "Okay, that's the timer, begin cleaning up, please"

3. "Darren, i see you have not cleaned up, everyone else is ready for X." Stand next to student facing same direction and close, so you are not in maximum striking range

4. "Darren, the consequence for not following my direction is no computer time."

5. Leave student be at this time. if they dont comply. Follow through on consequence. But dont talk about this right then.

Your student seems to crave power. Try to find areas where he can have choices and freedom within limits. Many students love to upset those around them. Do not give him that satisfaction. Teachers become great actors!

You received excellent advice from the other posters, i sure hope you did not go to work today.

The student owes you an apology. You might discuss how it is hard to win back trust. I would have 2 or more important school officials sit in on a casemeeting with the student. You might teach him how to win back trust.

In the long run, this experience will strengthen you. Get your paras gifts and kudos to them. They absolutely did the right thing. If what they did is against your ed code then your ed code needs amending!

Did you file a police report?

If not, do it immediately.

Do you have information about the child from the other school district?

I would give the police this info so they can contact the other district to find out information about this child and whether or not this is a regular occurrence.

You were SERIOUSLY injured. Any head/eye injury is serious. Immediately have your paras write up what they witnessed and why they reacted as they did. Send copies to principal, counselor, any case workers, behavior specialists, your immediate supervisors, district HR, the superintendent, and state officials. Include your account of what happened and a doctor's report.

Scour your Ed Codes and District Policies to find support for the actions of the paras. Include any specifically relevant citations of those codes. Ask the principal for specific guidelines (with cites) as to how your paras violated their duties and specific instructions as to how they should handle this student in the future.

Do NOT cave to this asinine principal. If necessary, find an attorney and bring him to a meeting with principal, superintendent, and their attorneys. This cannot happen again.

I do t know where you live but in cA teachers have the righty to suspend a student out of their classroom (admin has to figure out a placement for them) if the teacher feels unsafe because of the student. This is true even if the principal does not like it/want to support it. Check your state laws or talk to a union rep if you have one. Others have given good advice here. Good luck to you!

In addition to what the previous posters have said, it seems to me that this incident is serious enough to warrant calling together the IEP team to consider whether this student is properly placed and/or whether there are additional services needed.

Take care of yourself first. A concussion is a serious injury. No school for you until you are thoroughly healed and there is a plan in place to protect you and everyone in your classroom.

I second the replies above about contacting you union rep, documenting you injury, and filing a police report.

In my state it is illegal for your P to retaliate for any of the above actions. It is also illegal for your P to discourage you for doing so. I dont know what state you are in but in case you are in CA I am going to post ed code.

In my school we are given very clear guidelines about when we can and cannot use restraint and what you described sounds like it would be considered warranted in my district (imminent danger of severe injury without time to evacuate and a student using a large or heavy item as a weapon).

Don’t go to work. Go to the doctor with workers’ comp. paperwork in hand. File charges against the child. Call a lawyer or your union/teacher organization.

My DH’s school has issues with a violent child last year, and there was ZERO support for the teacher from the district. She resigned and went to a different school because of it.

Call in. Contact HR. Use the words my lawyer. If none of that works, file a police report and press charges.

Go to the hospital and have the documents ready to prove you were seriously injured. Take multiple photos of your injuries if you have not do so already and ask for written statements (time/date stamped, preferably on email) from your paras about the incident.

Do not come back to work tomorrow as returning will "show" that you were not really hurt, according to lawyers. Obviously this issue will not be taken as serious unless another students gets hurt and the parents complain but then they will probably just blame the incident on you anyway.

I'm sorry this happened to you. You do not deserve to be treated like this, especially in a place of supposed business.

Omg, I'm so sorry you got hurt and your P is responding like that. Do you have a union? Do you still have a headache? If so, you need to be on medical leave and I hope you filed a work comp claim.

Do you have a district sped supervisor? What does the P want you to do next time and when exactly is it serious enough to restrain? I would make them give you instructions how you are supposed to respond. Yikes, I'm sorry and don't blame you for wanting out.

How did he get transferred to you?

I teach a SDC for students in grades 6-8 with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities or severe learning disabilities. In the 6 years I’ve taught this class I haven’t had that many severe behavior issues - mostly my students only have attention issues, difficulty with emotional regulation, and mild impulsivity. My paras and I are all trained in safe restraint techniques, but we’ve (thankfully) never had to put them to use until last Friday.

One of my students is new to the district. He’s an 8th grader, aprox 5’6 (I’m 5’2), overweight, and strong. He’s diagnosed with a mild intellectual disability and ADHD.

In the month that we’ve been in school he’s displayed serious behavior problems - tantrums and other defiant and attention-seeking behaviors, but no violence (although he does have a history of violence in his previous school).

When I told him to put away a math game (after I’d warned the entire class that we would finish playing in 5 minutes), he refused. I told him again and reminded him that we’d play again tomorrow, he refused again. When I took the math game from his desk he became angry and punched me in the face. He then picked up his chair, but my paras were able to restrain him and take the chair away before he threw it at me. They restrained him safely according to the techniques that we were taught and he was not hurt. I, on the other hand, suffered a mild concussion and a black eye. When I informed my principal of the incident she insisted that my paras should NOT have restrained the student as the threat of injury he posed was not serious and the incident could have been avoided if I’d properly used de-escalation techniques.

Honestly? For the first time in my career I do not want to return to teaching. What am I supposed to do if he gets violent again? Stand by and allow him injure me/my staff/my students? How am I supposed to teach in this environment? My other students were very frightened by the incident, aren’t they supposed to have the right to feel safe at school? And if a mild concussion and a black eye don’t count as a serious threat, then what would? A severe, permanent brain injury? Unless another STUDENT is threatened/injured, I doubt my P is going to give a @#$&. We used to have a wonderful P, but he retired last year. Our behavior support specialist is no help, either, unless the student responds well to sticker charts (which yes, we’ve tried with this student - without success, thus far).
