Try your best to introduce all of the Presidents to the students, even the obscure ones. Then they can generate a list of who they feel should be portrayed in the program, other than the usual George Washington, Abe Lincoln, etc. It's up to you whether you select students for roles or have them draw them out of a hat. You could see if any girls want to be First Ladies if they don't want to be presidents as well.

If you don't want to have all of the kids be presidents, then have them act out pivotal moments in their careers, like Abe Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation, George Washington crossing the Delaware (please no chopping of the cherry tree!) No matter what, a.) always have them continue reading and learning about the Presidents in preparation and b.) always ask for their opinions but remind them that it needs to be accurate.

Hope this helps!

Has anyone done any type of play or performance with a President's Day theme? I have first and second graders and our play is scheduled for February. Does anyone have any ideas?
