We are having our 4-6 graders vote on November 6. They will be voting on their choice for president; also on the ballot, year round school calendar and 5 minutes of extra recess. We talked about the year round school calendar and 5 minutes of extra recess discussing the advantages and the disadvatages. Then we made anchor charts to hang in the room until we vote.

the 6 graders will be registering the other grades to vote, counting the votes, and releasing the results.

As a grade level, we have decided to create a ballot box and ballot for each student in our school. We are asking that each grade level have their students vote in our "Presidential Election" and then our 4th grade classes are going to count the votes. Our plan is to graph the votes in our school cafeteria for everyone to see. Also, one of the largest myths that we have found is that the students are convinced that whoever gets the most votes wins, no matter what, so we are going to use this time to teach about the electoral college. The 4th grade classes will use math to determine how many "electoral votes" each grade level will get and then we will determine the President based on that. We plan to do lots of math with the elections but will be doing it at the end of this week because students are out of school in North Carolina on Election Day.

What are you doing for the presidential election? The Texas Readiness Standard for 4th grade says that we are to "explain the duty of the individual in state and local elections such as being informed and voting". I think we need to address that duty in this presidential election too. I'm looking for some ideas that can easily be executed between now and November 6th. Thanks in advance for sharing your ideas.
