So many! I try to tie them in with books, but it depends on your grade. You can find more details on Pinterest along with tons of ideas. Here are some I've done:

1. Jack and the Beanstalk - read the book and the kids have to create a parachute that takes the longest to fall to the ground. Give them a choice of whatever materials you have and each team gets a SourPatch Kid as "Jack" to attach to their parachute (some made baskets to hold him).

2. 3 Little Pigs - read the book and give index cards or playing cards for them to build the most sturdy house. Use a hand fan (you can skip that part) to blow on the house for 5 seconds and see whose stays up.

3. Little Red Hen - draw a picture of a "help wanted" sign to get help for the hen. Then fold the sign into a paper airplane that flies the farthest.

4. Save Fred - can find info online, but it requires a few more materials - gummy worm, gummy life saver, small clear cup, and paper clips.

5. Spaghetti structure - using minature marshmallows and dry spaghetti (not angel hair!). Create a design first, then work together as teams to build the tallest free-standing structure.

That's all I can remember off the top of my head, but the kids LOVED doing them. I wish I had time/resources to do a different one every week for the school year.

It is helpful when you post to give us an idea of grade level so responses can be more relevant.

Do you want these connected to anything? Or just stem-y?

Beginning of year... save Fred
Paper bridges - lots of different ways to do this.
Newspaper building- teepees or just biggest structure
Build a better soda carrier

Lots of ideas when you google.
