I really like Junior Scholastic. Wouldn't want to teach without it!

I use Georgia Studies Weekly (not sure if it is the same as Social Studies Weekly) and I LOVE them. I am new to teaching SS for 3rd graders. And the "newspapers" are right along with out state standards. If they are not the same as the SS Weekly, try finding out if your state publishes something like it.

These are great magazines that last from year to year. I buy several every year and now have a large collection. Many, many social studies themes.

I have not taught from this, but you might get feedback from others who have. I was researching social studies lessons to go with the Next Generation Florida standards. I ran across a site that has "news pamphlets" that are bundled and shipped quarterly. They are by grade level and you can get them by specific state standards as well. I am going to try to order them for my class because our social studies book is out of date and does not correlate to the standards at all. I am about to start my 3rd year teaching and I have not collected very many resources. I am new to teaching social studies in 6th grade. My school is allowing $100 for teacher supply lists.

I'd like to get some recommendations on teacher resource materials that you feel are important to have as a social studies teacher. Anything from your favorite social studies magazine/catalog, to an item that will be very useful when I'm carrying out lessons. I've thought about ordering 5 large inflatable globes...I imagine a cooperative game dealing with location, etc...

The curriculum here involves world area studies, so they'll learn about Europe, Latin America, Canada, the Caribbean and Australia.

Any idea's are greatly appreciated!
