My student is very quiet so it is rare to her speak. Her parent says she may add the schwa sound some when talking. She sees our speech teacher so she has been alerted to listen for this. Our school teaches letters like /d/ , /b/, /g/ as quick sounds without the /uh/ sound so I am hoping with extra practice on these quick sounds she will give up this habit. She is also part of a fluency group so I am hoping that other students will be good models for her.

Thank you for your response. I have recorded the student and plan to work with her individually to improve her rate and how she sounds. She is very shy so I need to be careful to not create any anxiety.

the student was taught to sound out words, the schwa is often added to consonant sounds when overemphasizing phonics-- /d/ becomes /duh/. I think recording to make him/her more aware of how it sounds is a useful solution.

You might also do some playful work adding /uh/ to initial consonants when you are reading to the student.

Just checking: the kid doesn't add a schwa during speech, right, only during reading?

I have a third grade student who puts the schwa sound at the end of most words when reading a paragraph. When I ask the student to read each word individually, there is no schwa sound. Does anyone have suggestions on how to break this habit?
