I knew you were referring to REM before I even opened the post. They are your "baby" and our will protect then with all that you have!
Yeah, I agree, leave REM alone!

once bought a CD of Paul Anka covering a bunch of hits. I thought it was simply awful!

I think one of the best covers that I have ever heard is Sound of Silence by Disturbed. It has really grown on me since another poster left it here a few months ago.

Especially not "Fall on Me"! That song is PERFECT.
I have trouble with covers sometimes as well.

strange to read about a once cutting edge, set the bar kind of group doing covers of other bands.
What's next daytime talk shows and elevator music?

Covers can go either way for me; they often elicit either “Cool!” or “Yuck”.
I was just listening to Cindy Blackman Santana’s cover of Imagine. I thought that one was cool. It surprised me, because I would have thought that would be one of those “Don’t touch that!” songs.
My Oingo Boingo sweatshirt from the 80’s was one of my favorite pieces of clothing ever! I had forgotten about it until I read your post. Good memory....

I'm listening to a new release of Death Cab for Cutie, which seems to be covers. The first song is Waterfalls, which I think is a TLC song (too lazy to google). Good cover. Fine. Other songs I don't recognize, but one, Fall On Me. Yes, they remade R.E.M.'s song. NO! Don't touch their songs!
It is a really good cover.
But, no. Don't touch their songs, or The Cure, or New Order, or Oingo Boingo. Everyone else is up for grabs.
