I'll go ahead and give this out while I'm killing time before I have to be somewhere.

Before doing any of this, open the computer and once you attempt to turn it on, try pressing and holding the power button until the computer forces itself to shut off. This isn't a good method of restarting and should only be used in situations as this when a proper restart cannot be done. If you get the same result, try the following:

If the problem is what I think it most likely is (common glitch with HP) this will work.

Once you login and get the black screen try pressing and holding Ctrl+Alt+Delete. If that works a blue screen should pop up. If it does, at the bottom of the menu, press Task Manager.

Under the Processes tab of the Task Manager, scroll along until you find a process named Windows Explorer. Once you find it, highlight and right click on it. On the menu that pops up, you should see a option that says "Reset".... click it.

Now, go to the FILE menu at the top left of the Task Manager. Select Run new task.

The white bar the window that pops up, should already say "explorer" if not, just type it in without quotations and click OK.

If this works, immediately run Windows Updates, this is a well known glitch and Microsoft/HP should have released a fix for it by now.

Let me know if it works.

Thank you for your help I'm going to save this in case it happens again. My husband ended up unplugging everything and restarting it while I was at school and this seemed to work.

I hope it doesn't happen again. What a pain.

Do you know if it has Windows 10? If it does, did you recently install it?

Or do you remember Windows updates doing anything AT ALL just before this problem started?

I think I can help but those questions are helpful on my end.

My desktop is an hp and only about 3 years old. When I go to turn it on and type in my password the entire screen turns black and I am not able to do anything. Later it will shut down on its own. Does anyone know why this could be happening or how I can fix it?
