I moved to 2nd grade for exactly that reason! State testing pressure!

Pressure to teach to the test.
Pressure on the 8-9 year olds to do well.
Pressure to try to teach them things/have them try to do tasks that were not developmentally appropriate, and therefore, stressful to both them and me!

I completely agree with you. The pressure for them to do well is insane. I was recently told that our special education students are not doing as well on the state test as originally thought. We have special ed students reading at a first grade reading level, how well do you expect them to do? That test is intimidating, causing them to essentially shut down. Even the students who can have the computer read the test to them, are still done in less than 10 minutes. Administrators take the standardized tests as the end all be all, but unless we stress the importance of the test to the students, then they don't get it nor do they care; however, I don't want to put that stress on them, so I guess we just have to keep doing our best.

Just teach the best you can. If you believe in God, pray! That has really relieved me from the stress of it all. ( I used to get really stressed by testing too!) 6 more years left! You can do it!

It will be interesting to me when we get our scores back from this year's students.

I had a come to Jesus conversation with myself over Christmas. I don't really care about test scores, but I want my kids to do well. Out first semester I felt incredible pressure to get my thirds test ready. Nothing they did was good enough. All I could see was what they'd weren't able to do. They were not nearly prepared as well as my group last year, and I felt the stress! I came back after the break with a new attitude. My kids were working hard, and I sure would not have wanted my own kids that stressed out at 8 or 9. I was able to lighten up, and began to enjoy my kids again. Enjoy what they were able to do, what they had learned.

I think that as teachers, we are going to have to fight hard to remember those things and insulate the kids from the testing pressures. They sure haven't done anything to deserve that, have they? Poor kids. Poor us.

The best thing you can do is accept you must do some of these things. Pressure? Well how much pressure will it be for a student who can't keyboard and must to take a test? Understand how to take multiple choice tests or enter information on the computerized test?

The test tests the standards whether or not you like those standards. Your job is to teach those standards whether or no you like those standards.

I'm sorry there is pressure and you feel pressured, but your only option as I see it is to accept that you need to do these things and stop fighting internally about how you would prefer things to be.

No advice...but I understand. I am moving to inclusion, though I prefer gen ed. (I am also one who doesn't want to be a slacker.)BUT, I was not allowed to move to 2nd or 3rd.(I liked 3rd, even with the reading test,it didn't seem as bad.) This testing is so hard for students, families, and teachers. I just did what I could-it can be all-consuming. I tried to make the kids feel successful, even with poor grades,but it wasn't what it should have been. They were burnt out. Good luck.

Thanks for understanding! I would move to 2nd if there is an opening but it's not likely these days.

I just finished my 20th year teaching. I currently teach third grade and really love the age and grade. I am struggling with, however, the pressure that is put on us to teach to the CAASPP test, teach testing strategies, keyboarding skills, computer skills, and even some of the third grade common core standards that I (and others) feel are not developmentally appropriate for 8 and 9 year olds. Our district and my principal put a lot of pressure on the test and scores. Our scores are compared to others in the district and state averages. For the last three years we have not even had adopted ELA materials for common core. We've been piece-mealing materials from here and there and trying new programs because a neighboring schools had betters scores and maybe it was because of this or that program. I really feel conflicted. I want to do my best job for my students and I also don't want to look like a slacker among my colleagues. The pressure put on us and the kids is NOT good! I have at least 6 more years to teach and I don't see things improving, but really can't afford to change careers. Any advice on how to keep my sanity and still be a good teacher?
