Instead of family trees, make family tree houses. The people who live in the house are included on the tree. Grandmas and grandpas, mom's friend, etc. The kids can relate to this better than the family history.

I agree with kidsrmybiz... My father left before I was born and I hated family tree stuff in elementary school because I had to explain what happened to everyone and it just made it worse to deal with. Just be sure that is what you want to do...

I used to do this with my "All About Me" units, but families are not that simple anymore. So many of our kids come from split or blended families that the family tree gets so complicated. You have lots of where do I put my step-dad? I don't like (know) my real dad so do I have to put him on here? Where do I put my step-sister or half-sister or siblings that live with my real mom and step-dad.......just be sure you want to go there.

We are having an open house this week and since we are doing a thematic unit on "All About Me", I wanted to plan an activity where the kids could do something with their parents. Does anyone have a family tree template?
