I like a wall for writing and social studies only. Too many words and the kids won't use the wall, it becomes overwhelming.

In order to combat serious space issues, Iíve for word walls differently for years.

I am currently doing them on a ring. Iím he rings hang on command hooks under my chalkboards and are frequently used by the kids.

I have also done file folder word walls. I have tried word note books. I did not like that one at all.

I have also done a combined word wall as you are suggesting. I found that it worked well if I color coded the cards and use lighter color stop keep it easy to read.

The Fire Department really restricts what we are able to put on our walls. I have two bulletin boards and that is all Iím allowed. One is used to display the standards as required by the district and the other I use for student work.

Because of the above, I had to move to "word walls" that are placed inside writing folders.

Is there any way you can put them up creatively in the room to group them by category? I've used the sides of file cabinets, cabinets above sinks, etc., when bulletin board space was limited. Failing that, maybe color code them?

Those of you who are self-contained with word walls - are they multi-disciplinary, or do you only use reading/language/spelling/vocabulary words?

I've mentioned that I'm moving to a small room next year, and having more than one word wall isn't an option. This might even include having different displays (handwritten, typed from a series, etc).

So A might look like this

Author's Purpose
Addend (printed from a TPT download)
astronaut (from science)
always (from spelling)
Abraham Lincoln (from social studies).
