Hi all!

I have a Phonics lesson coming up in about two weeks in which I'll be teaching ai- and -ay vowel teams. I'm in a second grade room with no students on IEPs other than two speech IEPs. I am having trouble coming up with some good activities to promote the skill during the lesson. I enjoy activities to get students up out of their seats.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Have you considered making an interactive PowerPoint using words with the ai and ay spelling? I'm using one for my students on Thursday for short vowel lesson. My teacher and supervisor are very excited about this.

One activity that may be useful is a picture/word chart. You could create a chart and split it into two columns (one for ai- and one for -ay). Then you could have enough picture cards of objects or word cards for these vowel teams and have each student place their card under the correct column. This way the students have an opportunity to get up out of their seat. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Since you mentioned that you like to get the students up and moving I would suggest sending the students on a word hunt around the room for -ai and -ay words. You can then ask the students about their findings. Another option that could even be paired with the word hunt would be to create an interactive Power Point with the vowel team. Good Luck!
