I am currently interning in a first grade classroom and am required to complete an action research project. I chose to use math for my project and my question is "How will the use of manipulatives affect student learning of first grade mathematical concepts?" If you have any ideas or suggestions of some strategies that I can use while gathering data for my project, it would be greatly appreciated! Also, there are some ESOL students in the classroom and some students that have trouble focusing. If you have any suggestions or strategies that would help benefit them during lessons, that would be great! Thanks in advance for your help and cooperation.

Thank you so much for your suggestion! I will definitely have to try that when we get to our money unit!

I am currently teaching my students to count money. I found some great interactive videos on youtube that I projected off of my promethean board. If they each have their own coins to use they can count along with the instructor as they watch the video. It worked really well for students to have a hands on opportunity to practice counting change.
